Just saw a note that they'll be doing major dredging of the channels around Cohasset harbor and that the harbor is closed to non-commercial traffic after 9/30. The area closed (though probably not dredged) includes Little Harbor and Sandy beach.

Re: paddle float with heel hook
The part he kind of rushed through is getting your feet floating at the surface towards the bow. Then it's pretty easy to lift the outside leg into the cockpit to hook the heal. If you can hook the heal with a bent knee, straightening the leg drives the body across the back deck.

It's definitely doable in open canoe; we often did it when I was growing up in southern PA. Though if you run Skinners falls, dry bags and float bags might be your friend. It depends on how much experience with moving water you have and how good your canoe strokes are. All those weird cross bow draw...

Quite fun. It's the "Hammer" and comes in many colors. I've paddled one for a day, and it's a great frothy water boat. Big condition west coast style rock gardening was its target, but I think it will find its home as an expedition WW boat. Just my 0.02$ worth

In my opinion, it's great stuff for the summer, but no where warm enough for winter paddling. Also, most of the clothing has a fabric surface which encourages evaporative cooling. So it's less warm in the wind. Just to keep things in perspective, most surfers use a 5-6mm wetsuit or drysuit with full...

I've found that one coating of contact cement on the foam isn't enough, as much of it gets absorbed. As Chris mentioned, I do 3 coatings on the foam (letting dry in between) so it's now glossy when I add the last coatings to the foam piece and boat.

IIRC the gasp reflex, as Kate said, is most easily stimulated by sudden cold water to the chest, neck and face. Drysuits and PFD's prevent some of that exposure, but a hood or Tuliq would add more protection. From what I remember of WFA, you can condition yourself to be less sensitive to the gasp re...

new to paddling? Work in Boston? CRCK season pass deal
Folks-
Charles River Canoe and Kayak has a season pass system. It was one of the ways I got in to paddling. If you've never had a pass before, they've got an amazing deal going. Details are here: http://www.paddleboston.com/email/First ... g2012.html
Just to be up front, they taught me to kayak and now I teach and guide for them part-time.

I use the gray ethafoam for my feet but back it up with cheap pink insulating foam (1 inch thick 4 x 8 feet for maybe 10 $ at home depot). Other options is the cheap foam boogie boards you can find at wallyworld and the like.

Lorrie and I are heading down to Cohasett for some current play, rescue practice and rolling in Little Harbor Monday. High tide is 2:30pm, so we'll be inside till 3-3:30. Depending on energy and interest, current play could continue on the ebb. Maybe see you later in the afternoon.

Kinda funny that he's an ACA l5 instructor; in his demo he keeps looking at his paddle. While this encourages rotation, it diminishes stability and also reduces the ability to effectively edge the boat correctly (at least for our long a$$ sea kayaks). It's worth trying this sometime on calm water (s...
