Re: Looking for guidance
This may or not still be true, but it's worth checking out. A few years ago if you enroledl in one of their short series of relatively inexpensive lessons (all levels of expertise accomodated), Charles River Canoe and Kayak in Newton, MA lets use any of their kayaks for nothing, and for any length o...

Re: skeg issues
Audrey - Chris's suggestion is a good one. The problem is that the skeg system is designed to minimize the amount of room the cable has to move about in so as to minimize the possibility of kinks. Don't be put off too much be that. If it catches, just gently twist one end slightly and probe again......

Re: skeg issues
Audrey - Agggh! Skeg cables - the bane of my existence...BUT NO MORE! I have a Wilderness Systems Tempest 170. I had continuing problems with what some call the small "helper" tubing that joins the two main runs of plastic tubing which house the skeg cable (in the Tempest, anyway). The pro...

Re: Thursday Night Skills 2011 @ Camp Kiwanee Hanson
JohnBoy - I'll echo what Mark said. Kiwanee is a perfect pond for practicing with no risk of problems underwater (take it from someone who has spent too much time in that position!). I suggest that just before going to either Thursday session (alternately in Hingham and down at Kiwanee) you check th...

Re: Hearing scheduled for HB 652 the "kayak flag" bill!
It would be a good idea for those who wrote Sarah Peake to write her again, thanking her for sending the bill back to committee for further study and improvement. It would also be appropriate, I think, for some experienced, thoughtful kayakers to present their advice and suggestions at a subsequent ...

Re: Mis-guided kayak legislation
John - Would you post the text of your mail to the bill sponsor? It might be useful for others who write to her to reference points made by you that she seems to respond to favorably? It does seem that this is aimed at a perceived problem with night kayaking, and I agree with Norm that an appropriat...

Re: Mis-guided kayak legislation
Not to lend credence to what is an inherently stupid idea, but a valid question to be asked is "Who's going to enforce this, and at what cost?" The harbormasters who don't exist anymore because of budget cutbacks? Or perhaps the ones who still have a job, but have diminished funds, time an...

When the automobile made its first appearance, many municipalities required that moving automobiles were to be preceded by a walker carrying a red flag. A similar requirement ought to be made of legislators who submit silly legislation like this. However given current budgetary constraints I'm afrai...

Sorry Kath and I couldn't make it. Something about the 3.5 hour trip kept us at home. That, and the fact that you guys get WAY more snow than we do up in temperate Midcoast Maine. Heh, heh... Doug - Thanks for the suggestion. On a longish trip to Scotland a decade or so ago, I selflessly committed to "testing" as many single malts as I could. It was a good effort (31 was the final count) but there were sooo many left out. Realistically I'd have to work them all into the "t...

Pat - Thanks. Wikipedia has a useful post on the subject. Not that anyone should care, but the analogy I'm finding useful is to think of the tide as a very slow moving wave. At the very least, longitudinal differences would therefore account for part of a "local" high tide differential. Bu...

Can anyone point me to a web resource which would illuminate, in layman’s terms, the science behind tides and also the calculation of tide tables?
