re-enter and roll up
Hey DJ, Debates are good ! I personally rely on a re-enter and roll if i screw up a standard roll after capsizing. Provided the paddler has hung on to his boat- in those conditions i would definitely tether myself to a bungee line so that if I came up my boat didnt drift away-reenter and roll is rea...

Video
Adam, Nice video, shows you that not only how the rescue can still be executed but sometimes the perspective on the water is that the waves appear larger than they really are which can intimidate a good paddler. The key is to remember to focus on executing the rescue whichever one they decide to do ...

Cold Water Kayaking Fatality - Lake Ontario - Fifty Point
Another regrettable incident in terms of kayaking and cold water paddling safety. All due respects to this man's family, apparently he was a well schooled paddler and had complete cold-water immersion gear. I just question why someone would want to go out in 72 mile an hour winds with 40 degree wate...

Hi dana, If interested I have a barely used Necky Elaho HV for sale - cost me 2200 Canadian 2 yrs ago, will sacrifice for 750.00 US. Yes, neoprene is much much harder to release upside down, made me panic a little a couple years back when this happened - had a GUL full neoprene - tight fit, dry, hot and hard to get off the rim of the cockpit - sold it - went to an Ultralite harmony with a front mesh pocket - highly recommend it -...

rolling small boats vs. large expedition
Keep in mind as good as this guy is in technique, it takes a lot more strength to roll over a 17'10" boat with fully loaded hatches etc. The boat he is rolling weighs less than probably 35lbs and appears to be less than 15'. Good technique and positioning though - note the big hip snap at the crucia...

Further thoughts
I guess I should have qualified my comments on cold-water paddling - i was referring to paddling in conditions that would likely cause capsize or the need to roll...stuff like 5-10 foot heavy chop and beyond, windy conditions post-winter and that kind of thing. I agree also that drysuits and wetsuit...

Cold Water Risk Not Worth it
I may cause some controversy here, but I personally think paddling in water less than 40F is downright dangerous and not worth the risk. The average human being cannot hold their breath longer than 9 seconds in sub 50 degree water and this makes setting up for a roll next to impossible. That means a...

the Lot 41 Kayak for Fund Raising (Sydney Children's Hosp.)
For those seeking a unique kayak design, check out wavelength magazine's article about two kayakers raising funds by crossing the Tasman sea in Australia. The kayak is called " Lot 41". This could come in real handy as a support platform for a trip all the way down from NY harbor to the Keys !

Fall/Spring Combination Farmer John/Storm Cag Jacket
best bet for fall and spring IMHO is to use a farmer john, with armholes free, no more than 3mm, make sure it is a good fit, not too big or too small as it will lead to chafing - then layer over top with a base layer capilene garment longsleeve (underarmour etc.). Top layer should be a gasket fit st...

i agree with Craig, the design is very flawed, so much for carving a nice turn and getting some speed for touring. This product is ideal for one thing only - stable and unmoveable platform for fishing, so I would offer that it would be good for paddles of less than 1,000 yds out to a favorite fishin...
