Re: Harbor Island Off Season Photo Contest
Don't forget about the "gasp reflex" which occurs when the body is suddenly immersed in water. The water doesn't have to be that cold; however, the colder usually the greater the shock. Opinions seem to differ as to how to prevent or lessen the shock, but wearing full hood does help lessen...

Thanks Norm for the info on Hutchinson. I bought a Gulfstream (Hutchinson's favorite design) back in 2001. With the purchase came an invitation to attend one of Derek's clinics. I took his paddle/stroke clinic that spring. Unfortunately for me, I had removed the Mermaid/Dolphin decals on the bow of ...

Hi Ken, you can put me down for the distance paddle. Please check out the Naval Station's restrictions on paddling in their area north of the Newport Bridge. Last year they had signs posting area restrictions, and they seem very sensitive to intruders.

Hi Norm, I'll join you. I paddled the Taunton River about a month ago. My put-in was the ramp in Hathaway Park, Assonet. However, this ramp is mud at low tide. Not even approachable.

I'll be paddling out from Damerest State Park towards Allens Pond. This is an AMC paddle. I've been told that Gooseberry Neck parking is somewhat limited and can fill up fast on a nice summer day.
Have fun. I'll be in my Delphin to see how well it surfs into Allens Pond, if there's any surf.

It's in Yarmouth. You take the mid-Cape to exit 8, Union Street. Go north on Union Street to the end, which is 6A. Go left and then an immediate right onto Old Church Street which later joins Center Street. Stay on Center Street to the end (follow the signs to the beach). Again, this is an open ocea...

Re: The Monomoy chow-down is on
There have been several kayaks involved in so-called attacks. They were all fishing kayaks. Fishing kayaks have scuppers which drain off seawater from the deck. That deck has been used as a cutting board, so all the fish blood, guts, etc drain off thru the scuppers. The shark is seeking out the sour...
