Yes, indeed, our own Dr. Smoke and his fiancee Alex have officially tied the knot!

Rumor has it that they are traveling incognito somewhere in Quebec City after the not-so-secret elopement yesterday.

Congratulations, John and Alex!

Re: Gear swap?

Great idea! I'm sure Kate and I have a few extra items we wouldn't mind parting with. Boats, even.

NSPN used to combine these events with a paddle, so folks could make a day of it and/or not miss a day on the water. Throw in a potluck at the end of the day and it is a festival.

Now, venue.... hmmm.

Re: Blue Moon Sunset/Moonrie Paddle Brown's Bank, Plymth Sat

I was on an NSPN official trip some years back where the trip leader declared that Brown's Bank must have washed away over the previous winter. Never mind that it appears on nautical charts dating back to the 1700s. She couldn't find it, therefore, it didn't exist. Of course, it would have helped if...

Another place I used to surf all the time in the short boat was Baker's Beach, which is between Horseneck and the mouth of the Westport River. There is a boat ramp for putting into the river just off Route 88 after you cross to the south side of the river. The sand bars have shifted around at Baker'...

Re: Surf areas

A really good spot is Brayton's Point right on the MA/RI border. You can paddle there from Gooseberry Island quite easily and would probably have it to yourself. The offshore sandbars there can jack up some huge sets but they always let you go when they hit deeper water long before you get in to the...

The official story: THE KEEP-OUT sign on the dock at Gallops Island evokes the late 19th century, when new immigrants suspected of harboring infectious diseases were quarantined on the 23-acre island in Boston Harbor. But it’s not the fear of cholera or small pox that spooks visitors today. It’s fri...

Re: Oak Bluffs, MV (Part 2)

Great post. Fun to read and follow along with the swim. How fast were they swimming (approx)? Thanks, Nelson. Glad you enjoyed it. Rob swam almost a straight line of about 6.5 miles, so his pace was about 2.5 MPH. Laura's route was a little longer but she took just under 3.5 hours, so maybe 2 MPH?
