Tonight

Hi Guys, Yes, looks like the weather will be OK tonight. Just a note that the town beach officially opened today and they close at six. No boats on the beach until the lifeguards are gone at least. There is a small ramp on the right side that is fine for launching kayaks.

See you there,

Yeah, if it hadn't been a couple of their own precious golden boys, the NSPN snipers would have been all over that story with the "stupid idiots in kayaks that have no business paddling those conditions" mantra. Fact is, they apparently had no business paddling in those conditions, since they couldn...

I second Doug's recommendation. Did the cooking with him , bought the book. Now I don't need him.

Hmmm, I seem to recall that the last camp meal I cooked in the backcountry with Doug he said was the best he had had in quite a while...

I'd like to do it again, though.

Takes practice, like anything else. I hadn't been practicing it (still don't). The hardest part is getting into the boat upside down and then orienting the paddle. The roll part is easier in a flooded boat.

...and then spend the rest of the day bilge pumping, I'd imagine. Smile If you don't have a spray skirt, would it make more sense to do a self-rescue with a paddle float? Well,,, so you are in conditions (alone) requiring a self-rescue but you aren't wearing a sprayskirt? Ok, forgetting that little...

It's pretty hard to roll without a skirt and yes I used my own boat Actually , it's not. Just as a fully-loaded boat will roll easier than an empty one, a flooded boat rolls easier than a dry one. Re-enter and roll (without sprayskirt attached) is a pretty darn good self-rescue, and worth practicin...

Nelson Got Roll

Well, we had a slightly abbreviated session at the pond in Hanson last night due to thunderstorms, but it was all Nelson needed to get his roll. Jeez, first time trying this year and he was rolling consistently within minutes, after a little coaching from Jordan.

Way to go, Nelson!

Pond Sessions Starting Tomorrow Night, June 1

Pond Sessions will be starting Tomorrow Night, June 1 around 6PM (or earlier) and until dusk. The water temperature in the pond is up to 70 degrees at "rolling depth", and there were children and adults swimming there this afternoon.

Hope to see some of you there.

Nelson - With all the cold weather we have had, the pond is still pretty cold. I think we should give it another week, anyway. Starting first week of June just SOUNDS warmer. I expect to be heading to the Cape on Thursday after work, and with the long weekend coming up, I suspect most people's minds...

How Clean is Clean?

It is also the Hanson Town Beach, so the water is tested regularly. No motors are allowed, so pollutants are not routinely introduced that way. Let's just say that I probably roll kayaks hundreds of times a year in that pond and swim there with my daughter regularly and we've never had any ill effec...

Jason wrote: Are you looking to do any log boat surfing anytime soon or is that just too easy for you? No, definitely not "too easy", just a completely different sport. Surfing logs is definitely much harder than surfing kayaks. :) I had a great day in the long boat up in Essex today. Surfing Essex ...

Hanson Pond Sessions

Hi: This will be our third year of doing the informal skills sessions at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson. All are welcome regardless of skill levels. We all just show up and mess around in our boats, helping each other learn new skills and practice old ones. Work on that roll, try new rescue techniques, work...

Looks for Adam's Rebuttal Next Issue

For those of you who have been in this position you know that every word here is true" For those who have been there, we know that this is a crock. Adam wrote a letter to the editor in regard to this guy's "report". He's full of it. The biggest bluefish that I have caught from the yak was a fat 31-...

Hanson Pond Sessions

I think I will go check the water temp in the pond this weekend after we get a few more sunny warm days. I'll report back here. I expect it is still very cold, and the evenings are still kind of short as well. If folks want to do a warm sunny weekend session sometime in May, let's set it up. We can ...
