Hooking around the towee's cockpit rim is a great idea, and is a good option for the tow-er as well, especially if you don't have one of those nice $80 towbelts with the shock absorbing bungee. The main issue I see with that is the time needed to set it up. In one situation where I needed to do a to...

Well, Todd, I have some experience and I was willing to share it. My main point, I guess, is that most of these kinds of discussions focus on technical details and the gear, such as in this article. This is, in my opinion, minutiae that is fodder for the gearheads, but which overlooks the more criti...

The only time I discussed towing with Doug, his thinking was, that if you get to the point where you need to be towing someone, then you have already done alot of things wrong. Probably true, but nevertheless, things can go wrong despite the use of good judgement. I was on a paddle in January a coup...

You Can Fit a Square Peg in a Round Hole
You Can Fit a Square Peg in a Round Hole. I have Yakima Hully Rollers on the back and Thule Saddles on the front of my pickup's rack system. The round fitting of the Yakima system can be made to fit snugly on square crossbars.

Yes, the Hully Rollers act as your boat "saddles" on the stern. I have them and like them, but they can gunk up and stop rolling. I would probably go for the gliding-type saddles like the Hydro-Glide next time. Those are really slick and I actually think take less effort to put a boat up on than the...

I've been one of the regulars at these sessions for three years now (this will be year four) and the first year I only used my sea kayak, but don't plan on paddling around much, and it is best to stick close to a corner or side to work on whatever it is you want to work on in a long boat. The whitew...

Thinking about a New Year's Day Paddle/Potluck
Hey, this is just an idea at this point, but I was thinking of hosting a paddle/potluck from/at my house in Humarock on New Year's Day. From my house it is a short carry to either the South River or the ocean. High tide is around 9-10AM, so a paddle down the South River and out and around to the bea...

I thought you and Mark mixed it up like that out by the mouth of the North and South rivers?? Mmmm, not quite! The Fisher's Island Race in Long Island Sound is the closest thing to this that you can find in New England. I've only seen it from a distance, and it is pretty impressive, but not even cl...

John: I was surfing a favorite break in Scituate on Friday morning with a couple of my kayak-surfing buds. We had some set waves with ten-foot faces, so I bet 'tasket saw at least some five-footers. Nantasket is a tough break to surf. The waves tend toward closeouts and usually pack quite a punch. T...

Actually, Todd, a couple years ago I developed a book proposal complete with sample chapters, and a detailed outline for a book I wanted to write. The title - Kayaking Lake Champlain. I wasn't able to get a publisher interested, but I still have all the research, charts, notes, etc. I grew up in Ver...

By the time I was done and buttoned back in my boat the current was around 5-6 knots with 1-2 foot waves at the apex. The "official" max ebb current in Hull Gut on this past weekend's full moon tide was 2.4 knots. This is based on NOAA's tide and current tables. I'm sure I have seen it closer to 4 ...

Smoke: I paddled through the winter for a couple years, but last year I hung up the sea boat after the first week of November and didn't get back in it till April. I did kayak-surf all winter and did some whitewater as well, but winter touring got old for me. I think it will be the same this year. T...

Finn: You should ask Adam about this. He has built more than a few wooden kayaks and paddled a bunch of them. I also have not heard good things about performance of the CLC boats in particular. I've paddled a Pygmy Coho and didn't care for it much. The Night Heron from Nick Shade is a beautiful boat...

Humarock "Circumnavigation" 10-8
Adam, me and a few friends from the North Shore launched into the South River yesterday from my house at high tide and headed down to New Inlet. After a lunch break on the Sand Spit, four of us donned helmets and headed out to surf the river mouth on the outgoing tide. There were 3-4 foot breakers r...

Adam: It is a qualitative distinction. Here is your typical longboat "surfer": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUVVRHZ-I-o&eurl=
And here is kayak surfing in a more surf-friendly boat:

So, which one would you say was surfing?

Careful of your terminology. In surfing lingo, there is nothing worse than dropping in, which is when a surfer who does not have position on a wave, steals the wave by dropping into the pocket on a surfer who already had position. What you are describing as dropping in is probably better termed the ...

Well, I'm now living a block from the beach in Humarock and can see the swells rolling in from my roof deck, so with the clean big surf yesterday I just had to take an hour off from work and go try it out. Carried the surf kayak down to the beach and proceeded to get totally trashed, and after tryin...
