boat design

Howdy Chip, I thought I would throw in my two cents about boats. Here is how I look at boats: #1. Form follows function, there is some ugly boats out there that paddle beautifully and some beautiful boats that sit in garages. I like any boat that's skinny at both ends and wider in the middle. (with ...

Thanks everybody for coming to the presentation last night. Lena was excited to have so many paddlers there. Bea you are a gracious sport. Lena did want me to ask you if you knew what Norwegians had that Swedes don't? ..............................................good neighbors.

Thanks Bea, for posting this event. Lena is a great speaker and an outstanding paddler. She has been a keynote speaker at a number of symposiums. Ned Bangs, my wife Sarah and I were lucky to have Lena as an instructor back in the late 80's in Mexico. Hope to see you there.

Nsrwa duck race needs a few more paddlers to retreive ducks

Howdy New Turkeys, we could use a few more paddlers tomorrow to catch a few wayward rubber ducks at the Sea Street bridge on the South River during the NSRWA's first annual duck race and South River Festival. It would require about an hour commitment starting about 11:30. We have a containment syste...

Pat, I have got a spot for you in the bow of my Nootka, when we go camping on Washburn in early November, the only lifting required for you will be multiple sips of single malt scotch. Let's look at the tide charts. - Doug

Thanks Pat, Steve, Bea and Chip for your comments, no need to sell anything, why don't you just join us some year? We all have plenty of paddling years ahead of us, so we can make the trip next year or ten years from now. We had a good group, but lots of cloudy/rainy days, which is why the landscape...

The NSRWA's Great River Race needs a few Wild Turkeys

Howdy Wild Turkeys, the NSRWA's Great River Race is coming up on August 12th, with a rain date of the 13th. We are looking for 6 or 8 folks that would like to help us monitor the race, pass out water, encourage folks, patrol the river in kayaks, communicate with the other safety boats, etc. It would...

Chip, my very biased choice would be the NOLS Cookery, published by Stackpole Books. It has great information on nutrition, suggested pounds per person per day, depending on seasons and activities, it also emphasizes recipes designed around inexpensive easy to find foods. It helps you to determine f...

Pat, the logs get tossed up on the beaches during winter storms, most of them occur naturally, but once in a while a cargo ship carrying logs will lose its load during storms, there is plenty of cedar to make campfires with. Cedar will burn pretty well even if its wet. A situation not uncommon in th...

Good morning Steven, the toupee-like creature is a sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides). Its arm radius can get up to 18", its a fast moving star, it can move up to 360' per hour and eats scallops, sea cucumbers, butter clams and giant dendronotid (a nudibranch). Howdy Bea, in early March it was cold and stormy, which was part of the plan (an outercoast, larger water seminar for instructors who wanted more training in those conditions.) We had a number of low pressure systems with asociated southeast and southwest winds. Air temps mostly in the low fifties d...

Thanks for your comments all. I do believe Godzilla has been sighted near Curlew pond. I'll send some more photos to Pat, I haven't figured how to send attatchments to the website itself. Hope everyone is getting a chance to paddle. Steve, we are still looking for the owner of the toupee.

Happy paddling everybody, I've recently joined the electronic world, and I'm paddling unchartered waters. I've heard many good things about this site and look forward to getting to know folks on line and on some trips. I will offer to organize a few trips and skills workshops as soon as my work sche...
