Oak Bluffs, MV (Part 2)

Last Wednesday Briggsy and I kayak-escorted Laura and Rob Jones on their swim from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard. Here we are going over the swim route on my chart at the "dive in". https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_m6PZ5fiX2A/UANNTcrmiaI/AAAAAAAAAwY/6GubSRcPM6E/s720/04%2520-...

It is on this page: http://ohiodnr.com/Laws/OhioBoatOperatorsGuide/OpsGuidenavigationaids/tabid/2747/Default.aspx I noticed that too - that they seem to be markers for the ends of the shoals. So I dug deeper: Chart No.1 calls these "Bifurcation, Junction, Isolated danger, Wreck and Obstruction ...

Nav Puzzler 1: The conventional rule of thumb is called the "Small Triangle Rule" and the math is very simple: Ferry Angle (degrees) = Current Speed / Paddling Speed x 60 So in a 2 knot current, with a paddling speed of 3 knots, your ferry angle would be 2/3 x 60 = 40 degrees. Add 40 degr...

Nope. You will get ticketed there. (I did, several years ago.)

You can park on Border Street, down past the Lobster Pound.

I looked at the surf forecast for Scituate on Saturday and I think it was calling for a half foot. With an incoming tide, I'm not surprised you got skunked for surf.

I plan to be paddling in Duxbury Bay tomorrow afternoon (fishing.) I will put in at the boat ramp that I can't remember the name of around noon/low tide and probably paddle out toward Clarke's. I may see you at some point. Look for the tiger-striped sea kayak and a fishing pole.

Hello Laura: The route you have chosen has some clear advantages - namely, out of the ferry traffic for the most part, but it is also a considerably longer route than the shortest crossing from Cape Cod to the Vineyard. As a veteran of many crossings via kayak between the Cape and the Vineyard (the ...

Whenever I have launched from Scituate, I have always put in at the lighthouse, as opposed to way up in the back of the harbor where you show a launch spot. You launch from the beach just inside the harbor, paddle around the jetty and you are in open ocean.

I think it's a great idea, and rarely done. (We did one such session a few years' back in Duxbury Bay, in lieu of the usual Thursday night pond session.) The problem may be finding anything resembling rough water in Cape Cod Bay in mid-July. Buzzards Bay usually has the afternoon wind chop, but ther...

I'm putting out feelers for a possible trip to Woods Hole to play in the fast currents on Sunday. Fastest currents are late morning, so it would be a leisurely start (none of this 8AM stuff.)
