cgr - I have typically used really cheap reels and, although I thoroughly rinse them after taking them out on the yak, they are usually ready for the trash after a couple months of heavy use. I picked up a couple for $6 each when Decathlon went out of business last winter, so I'm using those now, al...

Paddling Kids?
Does anybody on here have kids that paddle? MY daughter, Jessica, age 10, has been paddling for a couple years now and we'll be going out this weekend for her first time this year. Got me thinking it would be fun to do a Paddle With Kids, if anybody has any kids about her age that also paddle.

Hey Lance, on the skeg problem, this might seem obvious but if you find you need to exert much pressure on the slider to try to lower the skeg, don't force it (or you will kink the cable), but first check the skeg box for any obstructions, such as pebbles, tightly packed mud, etc. Then, pull the ske...

No, couldn't have been me, but I'd love to try it! That hard-chined boat is a lot tougher to keep upright on those squirrelly eddy lines than my Explorer would be. (The Explorer surfs better, though. ) But on that stern squirt, he barely threw any kind of brace at all. Looks like he got some help f...

Paddling With a NOLS Instructor
Well, the Men's Kayak Rally today was sparsely attended, *Ahem*. Since it was just me and Johnnysmoke, I elected to make the newly minted NOLS instructor and Wilderness First Aid trainee the designated trip leader so that I could be the one getting into trouble. *Ahem*. It was a pretty mild day, vir...

Pat: The first step is, as you described, going over without setting up and then see if you can get oriented for a roll from a "disorganized capsize". As Nelson mentioned in his report, it was the disorientation that was unfamiliar and caused him to pull the skirt. Practice this on the pond for a wh...

I did a Three Lights Paddle with David Lewis a few years ago where we hit Minot's Light, Boston Light and the Graves in one day. As Birdseye pointed out, that's a 20NM day, with significant offshore paddling usually with at least some "conditions". Regarding the paddle south from Cohasset to Scituat...

Men with Kayaks Rally Sat. May 19 at 10:30 Cohasset Harbor
OK you fellow MALE kayakers (the only real kind), let's go kick some butt in the tidal currents and standing waves at the Cohasset tide rips this Saturday. Sorry, ladies, this is a real-kayaker-only event (that means us MEN.) We'll meet at the Parker Ave. boat ramp at 10:30, with the plan to get int...

This minor geographic technicality however does not minimize the potential for some real ocean conditions Exclamation If anything, if the typical Southwesterlies are blowing, there could be some good sized ocean swells and shoulder to head high surf at any beach landings along the exposed coast. Th...

Pat: we missed you at the BBQ, where were you? Your full tank of propane is still sitting where you left it. Turns out I had enough to cook like 50 pounds of beef, pork, venison, chicken, whatever else Jordan and Mike and Co. were cooking up. None left over, though! We had 16 paddlers on the water t...

Hi Pat: We launched from my house around 5:30, paddled down to New Inlet in a 20 knot headwind (I say this for John's sake ), played and surfed the standing waves on the outgoing tide for a while, tried riding some baby surf coming in to the sandspit, then pulled up on the spit for a couple beers an...

The water is still plenty cold, probably not much over 50 degrees. This is a protected, inshore paddle and very light winds are expected, but a wetsuit with some sort of splashtop/jacket really should be a minimum requirement for any cold water paddling. That said, I paddled with Doug in Alaska a co...

After Work Today, Friday?
Anybody want to get out for a couple hours this evening for a paddle somewhere? It is a corker of a day, and I want to hit the water.

It just came to my attention that there is nowhere in this thread that tells people where I live or how to get here. Ok, let's do a little food coordinating for Saturday. I'm pretty cool with whatever, but just so 50 people don't show up with a case of hot dogs each. I'll have the grill going, so stuff to burn on there would be good. Salads, desserts, cold or hot casseroles, what have you. Chime in. Let's make it ...

Outfitting With Minicell Foam
In preparation for the upcoming Outfitting Workshop, here is a quick primer on the materials and tools needed for outfitting with minicell foam. Most of what we will probably be doing is custom-fitting cockpits/seats/etc. but we can also make bilgepump brackets, safety flare holders, etc. Where can ...
