Cohasset/Little Harbor/Minot Light - 9/5

Post by pat »

Ok, let's try this one again.

The weather on Monday looks delightful. High tide is at 1:12. Therefore, I believe we should launch at 12:45, enter Little Harbor 30-45 minutes later, and exit it around 2:30. Then it's off to Minot Light.

Image

I know that ol' stick-in-the-mud Nelson won't be interested. He never wants to go anywhere.

;)

Anyone else?

It just keeps getting better!!!

Little Harbor and Minot light were and absolute blast. We had swells up to 4 feet. Minot Light was awesome up close. Here's one pic to whet your appetite. More pics and trip to report to follow.

That does it. I need a new camera.

Not that the one I have takes bad photos. But it doesn't have a "sports" setting, and it often sets the shutter speed too low and the pictures are blurry. I tried tricking it, but it backfired on me, and most of my shots were wasted.

I got some money for my birthday, and I was going to order an ONNO paddle, but Pat Works seems pretty busy, so maybe my money would be better spent on a new camera. If I can get one on ebay for the same cost as the paddle, I might go for it.

Here's one taken early in the trip before all hell broke loose.

To the left of the big buoy on the right is a little green buoy barely visible. Immediately to the left of it is Minot Light. That's where we went.

ONNO paddles is owned by Pat (not ours). He makes custom paddles for relatively low money. One man operation in California. I will be getting one over the winter. Check him out. http://eteamz.active.com/paddleshop/news/

Looks like a missed a great paddle but I scored major brownie points on the home front by passing on this one. Should open up the fall season for me.

The pictures make it look pretty calm out there. Like they say, looks can be deceiving.

By the way I see it Chip, you should have scored a whole freakin' bakery. I haven't seen you practically all summer. :D

I can't agree with you more. The water looks almost flat. Definitely not the way it was out there. Especially when you went almost vertical on that one wave.

Unfortunately not. :? The clips came out fair. Maybe I can splice some of it together and make a motion picture out of it. 8)

I did get out 6 times in July, which is amazing. I am pretty sure you were on at least 3 of those, including the Bumpkin Island trip. I have only been able to get out twice in August not including my sunset paddles on the pond. That 4 inch chop just doesn't cut it anymore. So, I have been out 8 times since 7/1 and missed 2 weekends. That doesn't sound as bad as it felt. We just haven't been on the same paddles much.

I know you miss me. I should be able to paddle at least every other week in the fall.

BTW, you should know that you don't get brownie points by just not paddling. For instance, staying in the hospital with my daughter or showing up for my kids b-day party instead of paddling does not provide brownie points. :)

Jeesh Chip, I'm only playing with you. Don't get all serious on me. I know you have responsibilities, but why so many?? You actually showed up for your kids birthday party?

I know. I guess I needed more smileys.  :D :) I am just jealous and I am working on a total of 16 hours sleep over the long weekend.
Typing it out like that actually showed me how much I have gotten out. Now, I am all rested and have the 10 pounds back on from that bakery full of brownies, so I need to get back at it before the ice comes.

Nice Piks Birdseye- Looks as though everyone had a good time. Was that a standing wave in one of the Lighthouse piks?

Thanks Todd,

Yes that was a standing wave. The pics don't give you an accurate feeling of how it actually was out there.

I gave the trip report to Pat, should be out sometime today.

Hey!

Great report. Fun catching you guys on the incoming current at Little Harbor.

My brother -- yes, he's Kevin -- was just getting used to our WS Tsunami 145s. (He usually just scoots around Duxbury in a sit-on-top kayak...so this was a new experience for him.) No way did we belong out by the light...but I'm still jealous. It was an uncommonly fine day to be on the water.

My wife and I are planning to bring some friends out to the Bassings Beach sandbar at low tide next Sunday. Great place to pop open some vino and have a picnic. We don't expect to do much serious paddling...but we'll probably go out to Strawberry Point (lands end at Minot) and goof around the ledges if conditions permit.

Here's to good September weather coming up.

I just added <a href="http://www.wtpaddlers.org/cgi-bin/pro/emAlbum.cgi?c=show_thumbs;p=Cohasset%20-%20Little%20Harbor%209-5-05%20(Pat%27s%20Photos)">my gallery</a>. Like I said earlier, I had camera problems, so my photos end in Little Harbor.

Nelson:

Nice report and great pics! Sorry I missed this one! How come no one climbed the ladder at Minot's? The view's supposed to be real nice.

How high were those waves?
