Greetings,

Thursday afternoon, is supposed to be beautiful with only light winds.

High Tide is at 3:40 PM

Is anyone up for an early start to the Hingham season?

Cheers,

Wish I could be there but not likely for me this week unless my truck gets fixed faster than scheduled and I pick up some more cold weather gear. :(

Got an appointment with the tax man this Thursday, but I could definitely be in if you go next week. (Fingers crossed the weather is good.)

I am a maybe/probable.

Kayaker was pulled out of the Thames River in Ct yesterday with hypothermia. No word on how he was dressed.

Would love to go but I think I'll stick closer to home and in a Lake/River... the hour drive that late in the day to get to Hingham wouldn't be desirable. I've already been out once, hope to get out again tomorrow!

Weather forecast sounds great:

Thursday...Partly sunny in the morning...then clearing. Not as cool with highs in the lower 70s. West winds 10 to 15 mph

I am planning on being there.

I'm afraid I'm a definite no for Hingham today. Can't get there in time so I think I'll check out Cleveland Pond at Ames Nowell State Park, Abington, at about 5:00/5:30 if I get my truck back from the mechanic on time. The pond there is large and fairly nice this time of year before the underwater growth chokes it in the summer and makes it feel like you're paddling in mud. I believe it's about a 3 mile paddle if you hug the shoreline all the way around. There are quite a few geo-caches there that are close to the water and can be reached by kayak. I'll probably just use my 9' recreational kayak and work on endurance. If anyone wants to join me I've got 3 other rec boats I could bring and lend out.

Have fun out there in Hingham today.

Great night

Post by kayakerjnj »

Well,

The weather was perfect, the rolling clinic put on by Chris and Kate was impressive.

The rest of us, Nelson, Mark, Ron and myself, along with the two rolling machines  had a great first paddle around Bumpkin.

We lucked out tonight, it was so strange to see the whole bay void of any other boats. The gas dock were not even set up. We had the place to ourselves.

We finished the night over at STARS and have officially kicked off the WT Paddlers Thursday Night Ritual.

Thanks to all for making the evening great!

Cheers,

It was great having someone else out there rolling with me! Chris did very well, no rescues required, he came up on his own steam every time.

Anyone else want to join us?

Low tide is around 4:15 on this Thursday; maybe launch from Cohasset or Hull?(nantasket pier or windmill pt?). Or Hanson?

Since the water is still kinda cold for us non-rollers and the tide is not favorable this week, how about a different idea...how about a lake that is large enough for sea kayaks, has a nice boat ramp with large parking lot and is usually too full of power boats in the summer to be enjoyable for paddlers - might be nice this week since it is still early. The lake I'm refering to is Long Pond in Lakeville. Here is the Google Map to the boat ramp location: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.783094 ... (Long+Pond)&t=p&z=10&f=d

If that is too far, another place with the same attributes, but smaller is Monponsett Ponds, which is not that far from the normal Thursday night Camp Kiwanee location. There's a good boat ramp and parking lot there also.

Lastly, another option is Lake Nippenicket which also has excellent parking and a ramp and is very convenient to route 24.

So what do you think, is it sacrilege to use sea kayaks on lakes?

Gene - I paddled the southern end in September 07, from the boat ramp across to the west side and then back east across just north of goat island and back to the ramp. I had limited time the 2 evenings I went and was alone so I did not venture as far as I would have liked.

I would like to get out this Thursday. Cohasset sounds good. I am not against a pond either. Monponsett is big enough.

Hi Chris and Kate.

For you die hard crazy cold water rollers....here is a new opportunity for you. According to this Norwegian weather station, you can actaully paddle to the North Pole this year! To find out how, just click on the link. I'll be happy to translate.

Cool! I plan on getting as close to it as I can this year - Newfoundland.

I wonder, if I paddled to the north pole and then tried to navigate my way back again - all directions would be south. I could end up in Norway. Or Siberia. Not much in the way of vegetarian cuisine there, so I hear....

Weather looks good again this week. High tide is at 3 pm; does 7:30 sunset leave enough water on the flats?

Could be a little mucky. You might be better off over by the boat ramp.

Do you mean the boat ramp over by Nantasket Kayaks? (Or are they even open yet?)

No, I was talking about landing at the HIngham boat ramp to the right of where we usually launch. There is a small channel over there.

There is some kind of construction going on at the wharf the Nantasket Kayaks are located.. And they are not open yet. I take the ferry with the owner, Scott, so next time I see him I can find out when he plans on opening up this season.

I plan to join you guys, I'll be launching near my place in Hull though. And 5 is too early for me, I could launch by 5:30 and meet you on your way out of Hingham Harbor? Or I can always try and catch up. Do you do the same loop every time?

I think our launching point will be somewhere near the Hingham Boat Ramp and we'll most likely be heading out to Bumpkin or around the area.

We'll look for you out on the water :D

See you tomorrow!

Jordan

PS: Our group launch time for tomorrow is still TBD, but I would assume it's between 5-5:30PM.
