Nelson. I'll be there Thursday.
And Pat, I agree with you about Hingham. The idea was to keep it simple and not jump around too much. We have a few paddle choices in Hingham, an easy launch, nice place for PPR, and it is a central location for an after work paddle. And of course, always a nice flock of Wild Turkeys there (11 of us last week!)

..I would also be up for City Point of an alternate afternoon/evening as I work in the neighborhood...If anyone is interested please let me know. Cheers.

What time do people arrive on Thursdays at Hingham and...
...where exactly is the put-in? I've been wanting to attend one of your paddles for a while and this week might be my best chance. I don't know Hingham well, so I'm not sure exactly where to go and at what time.
What is usually on the agenda? Is it mostly working on skills or is it little distance paddles?
(I'm assuming you don't mind a newcomer, but if I'm doing something wrong, please let me know!)

Directions can be found here(we usually leave at 6):

Usually we end up paddling around one of the nearby islands(Slate, Grape, or Bumpkin) or around Worlds End. Are there specific skills that you would want to work on?
Hi Marc,
On alternate Thursday nights (this week, then two weeks after that, etc.), we paddle out of Hingham Harbor. It's just a casual paddle. As a prerequisite, you should feel comfortable paddling for five miles at about a 3.5mph pace. More often than not, the seas are fairly calm, but you might see chop high enough to break over the bow of the boat. So you should probably have a spray skirt.
On the alternate weeks (next Thursday and in three weeks, etc) there is a training session in Hanson where people learn self- and assisted rescue skills, learn to roll, develop paddling techniques, or just sit in a boat and exchange kayaking war stories until it's time to pack up, head for the local watering hole, and sit around exchanging kayaking war stories.

Thanks for explaining. I shouldn't have a problem keeping up. Assuming I can get out of work early, I'll plan to be there tomorrow.

Oops
Sorry to muck up the headcount. Please add us (2 AYEs) to the table for PPR, although not sure we will win the party by any means as it is still a school night.... Thx.

Might as well add me to the headcount. Not sure if I'm going to Cohasset or Hingham for the paddling, but will join you at Stars at any rate. This may be my last Thursday night participation - I must reluctantly give up the free and easy lifestyle of the unemployed. The Broad Institute has taken me on.
I'm thinking I'll get to Hingham a little early and do some roll practice. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome - you spot me and I'll spot you.

Believe me, I tried!
But I WILL be taking off 2 weeks of vacation after working 2 weeks (Newfoundland kayak trip with Mark). My priorities are still intact!

Oh well then, welcome fellow Broadie to the geekdom that is MIT and Harvard! Which building will you be working in, 7CC or 320 charles? I work over at 320, and we have weekly ultimate frisbee games if you are interested in mixing it up a bit
Wow, small world. I'll be in 7CC. I think we play ultimate croquet.

After Saturday's paddle, my elbow is noticeably sorer, but I'd like to try something different. When I was paddling, I noticed that it was a bit of a strain on the left fingers. So I've modded a skateboarding glove that Chip gave me into a prosthetic of sorts:
Pat,
You may want to try an unfeathered paddle. I had finger/knuckle pain when I was paddling feathered and it went away when I plucked the feathers. Of course, it may have been an awful forward stroke that was the problem.
