"Firm" Weeknight Paddle

Post by getnoutside »

In a recent discussion, Pat mentioned the idea of having a firmly scheduled weeknight paddle that everyone could count on during the paddling season (ex: every wed evening). I, for one, think this is a great idea and was wondering if there would be a positive response to such an idea from the rest of the gang.

I like the idea, but it would somewhat depend on location. I assume we would be moving around so some would be easier than others. 6PM at powder point may be tough for me. 6PM on the Charles River in Newton or Abigail Adams park in Weymouth would be much easier.

Obviously, tides factor into the equation, as well.

If possible, I'd like to stay away from Wednesday night. Doug Gray has been doing the same thing for years, and I don't want to give the impression that I'm competing for his faithful. Chances are probably 100% that none of his people would leave him and go paddling with us, but none the less...

If it comes down to it, we gotta do what we gotta do for our family. (Sorry, Sopranos returned last night and I'm thinking in a Tony Soprano accent.)

Edit: Oh dear... It just ocurred to me that Thursday nights are kind of reserved for Hanson.

I'm all for it. As Steve mentioned, the tide would be a factor so even if Thursday's were the choice, on poor tide Thursday's the Hanson pond would be the spot.

There is always water from the Driftway to the Spit. Isn't it?

The Spit is beautiful at night, and you have a few paddle choice depending on the tide.....Up the North River...the South River......around the Island...

The parking is good and the launch is easy.

How about twice a month or rotating shifts. If I remember correctly the idea behind this was to allow people who might be interested in joining the group to come to a "non trip" type paddle with no real skill requirements. An opportunity for them to get to know us and we to know them? Not everyone would have to attend all of these as long as someone showed up (preferably 2 of us).

There a few non-tidal places to paddle if needed. We can hit some ponds.

let's face it. the paddling spot isn't really what's important here... it's all about finding a PPP (Post Paddle Pub) with good pizza and cheap beer.

I was initially thinking of a variety of locations - Hingham Harbor one week, Powder point the next, Nickerson Beach the next, but perhaps a more sensible thing to do would be to simply pick a place and stick with it. My suggestion would be Hingham Harbor. It's fairly centrally located to where people work, and parking is never an issue.

Tide, however, IS an issue there. We could only paddle every other week.

What about Hingham Harbor every other week (on the higher tide weeks), and a "to be decided" location on the alternate weeks. This provides a certain degree of consistency and a more central location twice a month, with the opportunity for a little variety and perhaps a bit more of a challenging paddle every now and then.

The nice thing about Hingham is that it's an ideal "get to know you" location. The paddle can be kept in the vicinity of the Harbor if someone new shows up. But, also provides more adventurous opportunities for the times that it's just already "established" members.

I think Hingham Harbor is an excellent choice and Stars is a great PPP.

What about Hanson on the off weeks?

That's probably a good plan to kick it off. Hingham and Hanson. We can always adjust it on the fly.

So the next question would be - When do we start?

The more favorable Thursdays (tide-wise) are:

Date - High Tide / Low Tide
Apr 6 - 7:22 / 12:04
Apr 20 - 5:20 / 11:24
May 4 - 5:44 / 11:32
May 18 - 4:19 / 10:11
June 1 - 4:18 / 10:05

(All times are PM except Apr 5 low)

After May 18 or June 1, we'll probably want to think about doing two Thursdays in a row and then going back to the "every other week" format, because the tide is going to be getting pretty low on our return, and we'll need to switch to the "other" thursday.

Or am I being too optimistic about how early we'll be starting?

Here's what the Farmers Almanac says. I've been watching it all winter and it's been pretty accurate.

March 2006
1st-3rd. Stormy in New England. Unsettled across the Mid-Atlantic States. 4th-7th. Clearing skies. 8th-11th. Fine and dry. 12th-15th. Continued fair. 16th-19th. Partly sunny. 20th-23rd. The unusual spell of fine weather comes to an end with unsettled conditions. 24th-27th. Fair. 28th-31st. Squally, followed by gradual clearing.

April 2006
1st-3rd. Initially pleasant, then unsettled. 4th-7th. Rainy, then fair. 8th-11th. Fair turning stormy. 12th-15th. Thunderstorms clear away, becoming fair. 16th-19th. Unsettled with showers. 20th-23rd. Fair and unseasonably warm. 24th-27th. Big thunderstorms into New England. 28th-30th. Fair conditions end the month.

Week night paddles

Post by chpaton »

Hingham might work for me, depending on the starting time.

Re water temperatures. I did a brief check near the Quincy Yacht Club last Friday - in the shallows temp was about 39 - 40. If the weather is warm and sunny we might pick up a degree or two every couple of weeks as the warmer weather approaches.

Channel 5 weather girl JC Monahan displays the water temp (from the Boston Harbor weather buoy) each morning during the 5-7AM Newscast. It was holding at 40 most of the winter, dipped to 36 during the last cold snap and is currently fluctuating between 38 & 39.

For tracking water temps and other related info, here's a link to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Data Buoy Center for Station #44013 (16 Nautical Miles East of Boston)... more info than you'll ever need, or want to know.

Standing Weekly Paddle

Post by kayakerjnj »

Sounds great to me. I'm located in the South Shore, and could make most locations without too much difficulty. I'd be happy to join the crowd if this comes together.

Cheers,

It's nice to see some new folks chime in. We should get these weeknight paddles going as soon as the water warms up. We are still in Wetsuit/drysuit water temps. The harbors should warm up soon.

I'd definitely be interested.

I take the commuter boat across the Bay twice a day during the week. Believe me, the water is currently quite cold. :!:

We'd kind of already decided on Thursday nights, though. Doug Grey already does Wednesday nights, and I don't want to compete with him.

I don't think Doug has started his harbor tours yet. This one doesn't sound like an official Thursday night paddle anyway. Those are in Hingham Harbor.
No rule against posting a night paddle on any other night. I will probably do it later on. He did move it to a different thread.

My intention is to jump start the Weeknight Paddle, not necessarily commit a particular night.

Personally, I can't do tuesdays and thursdays might be tough.
