Thursday Night Skills 2011 @ Camp Kiwanee Hanson

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings All,

It's time to announce the first Skills Night for the 2011 season.

Thursday May 5th. will be our official kick off for the seasons skills sessions.

This is still early in the season, and dressing for cold water immersion is essential. Wetsuits, and or preferrably dry suits are mandatory. Dress appropriatly, you'll be more comfortable, warmer and most importantly, you'll enjoy yourself a whole lot more.

Another personal comfort recommendation, bring nose plugs and or goggles for your wet practices, you'll be glad you did.

The bi weekly plan is to arrive by 6:00 PM (during April and into May 5:00 PM), and play-practice till dusk , or until you can't stand emptying the boat again. Last year, many consistently were able to start around 5:00PM throughout the season to enjoy more daylight and warmer temps .

Where this is the first skills session of the season, plan on bringing appropiate cool water attire, until the water temperatures are more comfortable.

These sessions are very informal, and lot of fun. We practice number of skills, from a first wet exit, basic paddle strokes, to rolling your kayak. People come whenever they want, work on whatever they want, either in groups or alone. We are fortunate to have an increasing number of very skilled paddlers always willing to help out other folks with new skills or just spotting each other.

Last years skill session participation was great and our hope this season will be too!

The location to start this year will be at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson.

We're looking forward to meeting many of the recently joined members, and look forward to seeing you on the water.

Can someone take a thermometer and give me a water temperature, please? Got to be warmer than the ocean but with only a wet suit wondering if still too cold for 'boat play'?

Hi Jordan, Thank you for still handling the
skill sessions. I have been IN the ocean,
trying self rescue attempts for about a
half hour,with No wet suit.
I see wet suits are mandatory. I just need
instruction of exiting my new boat. Can
i still play. I don't have a wet suit.
Thanks for your rely. Johnny

Hi John,

Cold water attire is mandatory for paddles in the ocean, and would be downright dangerous not to have it, especially for those of us who are not experts and may end up wet, if the conditions got gnarly.

For practice sessions such as is Hanson, we're not worried anyone is going to be in the water for an extended period of time or more than 100' from shore alone.

All that being said, c'mon down and practice and play to your hearts content. From Kate's latest post, the water in the pond should be quite reasonable for this time of year. We just recommend cold water attire for practice too, so folks don't cool off too fast and have their session shortened needlessly.

Nose plugs or a mask is another comfort accessory that makes practicing a lot more enjoyable.

See you tomorrow!

Hi all,

We had a fun start to the skills sessions at Hanson last night.

Norm, Skip, Tracey, Barb, Chris, and I kicked off 2011 at Camp Kiwanee.

We had a weather filled evening, plenty of wind to start, some rain, and some sun, but a good night.

Does your temp model include the snorkle you had Barbara try?

Bea, I tried the hose through the spray skirt idea in working on my roll. But all I got was water in the hose so I had to bail in a wet exit. Still refining the technique and the gear. Have you tried it? Any suggestions? Looking forward to paddling with you again this summer!

Barb,

Doug told me that trick a few years back, and it's how I learned to roll, but I had the same problem the first time.

The problem was that the hose was curling back so that it was pressing against the inside of my sprayskirt. That is, as I'm sitting upright in the boat (not capsized), the hose is curling upwards toward my head. Once flipping over, this means that the hose is now located at the lowest part of the boat - the sprayskirt - where gravity will pull any water.

The solution to this was to secure the bottom of the hose some place where it wouldn't curl back. I managed to jam it next to my seat.

This trick made all the difference for me, because I was able to sit upside down calmly and breath through the hose a few breaths before even trying to roll. It gets rid of that feeling of "OMG, I've got to get upright soon or I'm going to die!!"

Hi Barb.

Yes, I had heard about the hose trick from Pat who had heard it from Doug. I tried it once without much luck. Now that Pat has refined the technique I think I'll try it again. Thank you for the great suggestions, Pat.

The other thing you can do with the hose trick is just stay upside down and paddle back to shore. Paddling a sea kayak while upside down is yet another stupid kayak trick that is perfect for Thursday night "skills" sessions.

Hi everyone, not trying to sound angry, but i have
gone to camp kiwanee on the 19th and 26th and
no one to be found. why would anyone want to
try boating skills in a pond filled with large bounders?
Do i have something wrong with me or what?
It is a terrible trip down there in rush hour traffic.
very annoying . what's the story? Does everyone live
in Pembroke, Marshfield, Hanover and Norwell?
Please enlighten me,

The skills sessions for Thursday nights are every other Thursday. The other Thursdays we meet in Hingham.
No one was at Hansen this past Thursday, the 26th, because it was a Hingham night. 9 people paddled.

The previous Thursday, Jordan had let every one know that work commitments were keeping him from going
and I'm sure some of the other people who normally attend skills, (including myself) were getting ready for the
Washburn Island camp trip that was May 21st to 22nd.
it appears there is another thread, besides this one, that was started for the skills on Thursday. It is more up to date.

Hope this was helpful.

I don't know what a bounder is, but if you meant "boulder" there aren't any in the pond at Camp Kiwanee, so I suspect you may be going to the wrong pond.

JohnBoy -

I'll echo what Mark said. Kiwanee is a perfect pond for practicing with no risk of problems underwater (take it from someone who has spent too much time in that position!).

I suggest that just before going to either Thursday session (alternately in Hingham and down at Kiwanee) you check this blog for late posts. Weather and people's personal schedules get in the way too often, and they can both cause some late changes in the schedule. But I can assure you from a lot of past experience, the people who organize these sessions are very diligent in posting "late-breaking news." You'll like the group a lot. I promise you that.

God Bless you guys for putting up with me.
Directly off rt 58 is a Camp Kiwanee sign of
dark brown color, went threw a narrow area and
came to a small parking lot with 3 docks that had
pick nick tables and a fence all around it and locked.
there was a small launch area to the right, and
believe me there were plenty of large rocks. The
pond was very nice and had a small island near the
far end. Wrong place? I bet your correct.
sorry about the typing errors.
my spell check is toast and i am seriously challenged.
i just want to be with you guys and girls. The other
Thurs. you guys are down at the ocean? Right?
I don't want to play there. Thanks again.

You were in the right place, johnboy. But there aren't any rocks out where you will be practicing. The ones along the edge don't cause any trouble. Go and learn and enjoy!

If you're from England, like me, a "bounder" is one of those chaps always up to no good, a cad, a ne'er do well, a real rotter, so who knows, maybe it was full of unruly paddlers ???

Hi, everyone - I really enjoyed meeting you all last evening at "the pond"! I can see that it is a safe and comfortable place to practice skills, the water is clean and warm, and the expert help greatly appreciated. I also had fun at the PPR afterward :)

Jordan ... best of luck with your surgery ... I hope your recovery is quick and you'll be back in paddling form ASAP.

Hope to see everyone in Hingham next Thursday! ... Pam
