Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Marshfield has a new kayak launch at Peter Igo Park in Brant Rock. Volunteers spent hours and hard work clearing a path so kayakers can easily bring their kayaks from the Peter Igo parking lot down to the launch. As far as I know you do not need a permit or live in Marshfield to park and launch.
Below is a statement I have been asked to post on the Wild Turkey Site plus some photos I took the day the kayak launch was installed:
"Peter Igo Park is located in Marshfield MA at Marshall Avenue and Dyke Road, and provides kayak and canoe access to the Green Harbor River, as well as basketball, tennis and other recreational opportunities. There is ample parking.
The park is being renovated through the “Peter Igo Park Initiative” and the existing kayak/canoe launch trail is being maintained by local volunteer efforts (see http://www.peterigo.com)
(KAYAKER/CANOERS: from the parking area to the kayak/canoe “put in” point, cross the open field and a well-cleared trail, of about 100 yards each (total distance to carry your boat of about 200 yards)."
Peter Igo Park:
The path leading down to the dock:
The view from the dock (beautiful sunsets here):
This is all flat water kayaking which will lead you up towards the Audubon Society "the farm":
The dock can not be seen from the road. This photo is taken from Dyke Road:
Here are volunteers from Marshfield Tennis Club paddling the dock to its location:
The volunteers securing the dock:
Years ago Pat Traynor and I kayaked the Green Harbor River. We launched from Dyke road and dragged/slipped the kayaks down to the water. Not an easy access. This is a great gift to paddlers. Hope you get a chance to go out and enjoy it!

That kayak they're in looks like it's got great primary stability, but I'll bet it's a bear to roll.

The sunsets on the Green Harbor River are breathtaking. The launchspot is perfect for a sunset paddle or for short flat water adventures. The river takes you up into the Audubon bird sanctuary where you find little creeks to paddle through and plenty of birdlife. All very protected and no current to worry about if I remember correctly.

It IS a very pretty area, and a terrific addition to the list of quality flatwater locations.
Bea, have you been there? That view in the third photo looks like it could be tricky to get into a kayak. Is the photo deceiving?

Pat,
Yes, I have seen the dock since I was there the day they put it in. I have not tried to launch from it, and I am curious how it would work. Some sort of a dock launch I guess, since there is no beach or sandy spot right there.....
Anyone who tries it out, please report back.....

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Very cool. Years ago I scouted both ends and both sides of the Green Harbor River looking for a better put-in than Dyke Road. Never found one, and never paddled it.
Thanks for posting!

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Some friends and I might go and check this out on Sunday. It's supposed to be 80 degrees.
Depends if I can get my pool closed on Saturday and other chores done - and I can shake this
cold that seems to have crept up.
Anyone else interested?

I would be interested in this paddle.
Please let me know if you go.
Thank You,

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
As much as I want to go, I feel awful. This cold has morphed into something more.
I just hope it's not the flu. Going back to bed. Sorry Donna.

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
I was actually ready to sign up to go tomorrow, but I had a little spare time today and decided to go over and check it out.
Problem #1 is that it's going to be tricky getting in and out of a kayak.
It's about 5' across at the end, and I don't see anywhere you can put a kayak in the water. It either needs an 8' extension, or some major defoliation along one side.
But the issue is moot for me, because the distance from car to launch is (at least in my case) prohibitive. Bea's message DID say 200 yards, and maybe I wasn't paying good attention to that, but carrying kayaks and gear a couple of football fields is going to be challenging, especially on the way back, when some of it is uphill.

Anywhere to lock a set of Kayak wheels to?

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Pat,
the 200 yds quote is from the "Peter Igo Park Initiative", and it is not mine. To me it seemed a lot longer, but I was not going to question their statement. I was also wondering how to launch in my 17 sea kayak when the area around the dock has not been cleared. However, I thought that was my lack of skills not coming up with an idea!
I drove by there last night, and the area is stunningly beautiful close to sundown.
They asked if we could share links?

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
If we all pitched in a cup of coffee we would have bought from DD or somewhere else... we could cover the lower dock with indoor/outdoor carpeting and SEAL LAUNCH! I'm still working on the 'carrying distance' thing.

Sure.
With a plastic boat, I could do the "seal launch" even without the carpeting. It's the "seal gets back onto the dock" part that has me stumped.
Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
It seems like they need a second length of dock and a cross dock at the end like a T.
Hey... maybe we could paddle back out to Snake Island and grab those big chunks of floating foam and drag them back across the harbor to donate as float material for the additional dock sections?

Pat - take a look at this video for tips on how not to do a seal launch with a sea kayak.

Gotta give her credit for sticking with it till she rolled back up!
Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
I have a free day next Wed. 11/2 and would like to check this area out, but it doesn't look like an easy launch alone. Anyone else free? Interested? Bueller?

Sue, I think I'm around next Wednesday, and I know the area. It will be a short paddle though. Probably less than 5 miles total....

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Two of my favorite paddling buddies tempting me to take another vacation day off work. Not sure Marshfield will be feasible next Wednesday though because low tide is at about 11:00am.
Hopefully the weather will be better next week and Briggsy will want to do a leg of the Cape Cod trip. I'm sure both of you wouldn't mind a trip to the Cape?

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Norm, that would be an excellent option, but for a longer paddle I would have to find a babysitter. Possible, but not guaranteed.

Norm, sure...yes..and I have all the cold water clothing now.
And Sue, the Green Harbor River is at it's best later in the day (around sun down). Can you get away at that time of day?

Hi Bea,
I could get away at that time of day on the weekend. Weekdays are pretty full.

Norm, tide has little effect on this area. The water passage under Rt 139 is very restricted, so the place doesn't really drain out.
Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Thanks for the info Pat - I don't know anything about that area.
I think the cold weather gear is going to get a test this weekend with the temps that are forecast! Maybe I'll make a run to CRCK this Saturday morning and do some shopping. I need a real dry top.
I'm free Sunday. Not free Saturday after 4:00pm - high school football game.
Last weekend, Jordan was talking about doing something this weekend. I don't know if the cold, rainy weather has put a damper on his hopes for a nice paddle somewhere.

Re: Marshfield has a new kayak launch
Right now we might get a piece of a Nor Easter for Saturday
It's tough trying to fit a summer's worth of paddling when the weather won't cooperate
Honestly, I'm not sure about anything on Saturday if it's going to be lousy as forecast-ed.
