Little Harbor, Cohasset

Post by Dick »

Hi,

I rarely post here but am wondering if anyone has paddled this area. It looks very picturesque but there's a strong current under the bridge during flow tides. I'm not sure if there's a put-in nearby but I think access is limited due to all the mansions in the area.

Anyone have experience with the area?

Dick,

There are usually a few trips to Little Harbor each year. I believe most people launch from the Cohasset boat ramp and paddle out and around the point from there to reach Little Harbor. Yes, you do need to time the tide correctly to get in and out of Little Harbor under that bridge.

If you try out the search feature of this website and search on "Cohasset Little Harbor" in the "Trip Reports" forum, you'll get a bunch of matches.

If you don't want to deal with the search feature, here are a few of my trip reports that include info on Little Harbor.

Wow, thanks Norm.

Excellent trip reports! Those pictures of the mansions make you wonder who lives in them. Certainly nobody I know.

I didn't think of checking the trip reports first, but I will next time.

Dick, I really thought I did a mini trip report on this, but I can't find it. One day, my wife (not a powerful kayaker) and I (also not that powerful, but I can take her :D ) drove into a small cemetery that's on Little Harbor and were able to launch from there without having to deal with the currents at the inlet. Just make sure of a couple things... When you get near low tide, it's REALLY low - most areas are difficult to paddle. Also, don't venture near that outlet. If you get sucked out, you ain't coming back in.

I read that earlier. It was certainly fun being a newbie. We don't seem the get that excited anymore. I miss those days. :(

What a bunch o' N00Bs!

That WAS fun. The problem now is that to get that level of "OMG, we're in deep now!", we really have to some seriously life-threatening stunts. That's ok. It's still great fun. But you never forget your first...

You guys have some really nice trip reports. I think a Little Harbor/Minot's Light trip is definitely in order for the upcoming season!
