Keep in mind that no sharks have ever been spotted on the western side of Monomoy where the water is shallow due to all the sandbars. So, it is reasonably safe to visit Monomoy as long as you stay on the bay side and don't take a walk across the island and swim on the ocean side like some silly people I know did back in 2010.

There are some seals to be seen on the western side, but nowhere near the quantity that are on the ocean side.

Statistically, the car trip to and from Chatham is more dangerous than the threat of being attached by a great white while kayaking off chatham. .

I look at the positive side of the situation. The shark did not attack the kayak. :D

Great whites are beautiful, majestic and rare animals. Count yourself lucky if you see one up close.

Well, in the same newspaper, about 5 pages on from that front page story was another story about a guy who was fishing from his kayak in California, when a Great White nudged his boat, then took a chunk out of the front of it and knocked the guy into the water. Luckily there was a powerboater nearby who pulled him out, so don't think they won't attack !!!

There have been several kayaks involved in so-called attacks. They were all fishing kayaks. Fishing kayaks have scuppers which drain off seawater from the deck. That deck has been used as a cutting board, so all the fish blood, guts, etc drain off thru the scuppers. The shark is seeking out the source of a potential meal.
There was a guy fishing in the surf at Wasque. He had a bluefish tied to his waist belt of the wadders. All was fine until he noticed the fin between him and the shore. In this case it was a bull shark. Bull sharks are far more aggressive in attacking humans than whites.

I wonder if the guy had "called in sick"? He wouldn't give his name.

Heres an interesting website I found in the Cape Cod Times

http://www.ocearch.org/

A few weeks back they tagged 2 large Great White Sharks, it was on TV...click on the "Shark Tracker" tab in the top right and find out where those 2 sharks are.

Yeah, looks like Genie likes Nantucket and doesn't want to leave, but Mary Lee headed back south.
