From Doug:
Hopefully, Doug will be back online soon to give us some details.
Pat! I'm back in Marshfield, hope you survived the floods. I've got a bunch more photos for you. We had two great trips, close to seventy days on the water and the school has six new instructors ready for hire. The outer coast of British Columbia is spectacular. Fun currents, crossings and swell. Talk to you soon.
Hopefully, Doug will be back online soon to give us some details.

Thanks for your comments all. I do believe Godzilla has been sighted near Curlew pond. I'll send some more photos to Pat, I haven't figured how to send attatchments to the website itself. Hope everyone is getting a chance to paddle. Steve, we are still looking for the owner of the toupee.

Howdy Bea, in early March it was cold and stormy, which was part of the plan (an outercoast, larger water seminar for instructors who wanted more training in those conditions.) We had a number of low pressure systems with asociated southeast and southwest winds. Air temps mostly in the low fifties during the day, thirties at night. Water temps in the upper forties. The next course was warmer, sixties for air temps fifties for water temps. Perfect paddling temps. There is no road access to the central coast of B.C., so you have the place to yourself. It is a challenge to fit thirty days of food, but that sure makes the boats stable. The picture of the lifeboat with John holding a snowball was from the ferry we took up on the first trip, it sank three nights after we got off in Bella Bella. They only lost two out of one hundred people. An electronic navigation error. There is no substitute for a compass and chart! The photo of the bird prints in the sand next to my big foot are from an eagle, who's populations have returned to healthy numbers.
Maybe some day will do a Rec. trip up there.

Good morning Steven, the toupee-like creature is a sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides). Its arm radius can get up to 18", its a fast moving star, it can move up to 360' per hour and eats scallops, sea cucumbers, butter clams and giant dendronotid (a nudibranch). Their color range includes, orange to mottled orange, purple and purple-grey. The intertidal life along the coast is amazing, warm currents and upswell create a nutrient-rich environment. A wonderful read about the human and natural history of the coast is "The Last Great Sea" by Terry Glavin.
The anemone in one of the pictures is the painted anemone (Urticina crassicornis) its sometimes called the Christmas anemone, we have it here on the north Atlantic coast.
I would love to give a presentation about the trip if there is interest, maybe at Doug Grey's, in his new classroom space.

I'd definitely go to that presentation. I'm assuming that Doug Grey's classroom is in Plymouth, right? That might be a bit far south for most of the WTP folks. There are several that are up in the Weymouth/Quincy area. Maybe at Ventress?
What's the deal with all that wood in that second to last photo? Did they all just naturally wash up onto the shore, or is that the result of some lumbering operation? And was there any wood small enough to use on a campfire??

Thanks for the info on the "star", Doug. As a kid I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist (was going to be the next Jacques Cousteau). Only problem was that after majoring in Biology for 2 years, I discovered that Chemistry and Differential Equations were not my strongest subjects.
I'd love to try and attend a presentation of your trip.

I just wanted to tool around with one of those underwater scooters... I guess I should have thought it through before I committed, huh?
Pat, the logs get tossed up on the beaches during winter storms, most of them occur naturally, but once in a while a cargo ship carrying logs will lose its load during storms, there is plenty of cedar to make campfires with. Cedar will burn pretty well even if its wet. A situation not uncommon in the Pacific Northwest. The logs make great furniture for our camp kitchens. The timber industry is alive and well in B.C. and Alaska, but the Canadian government along with some First Nation groups just went a long way to protect much of the coast where these photos were taken.
