NSRWA - Great River Race - Aug 18 - need volunteers

Post by pat »

Every year, WTP volunteers to act as safety boaters for NSRWA's Great River Race on the North River. This year's event will be on Saturday, Aug 18. We need at least six people (eight would be better) to monitor the river at various points. It's a pleasant way to spend a summer afternoon, requires fairly little on your part, and you get a free t-shirt out of the deal. And there's PPR!

Let me know if you'd like to be involved this year. Rescue skills (like what we learn in Hanson) required.

For those who have never done it before, here's what we do: We pick a few points along the river where we'll be stationed and decide who will be where (we're usually stationed in pairs). Then we paddle to those points and basically keep an eye out for boaters in any sort of trouble. The NSRWA gives us water bottles to hand out to people who might need them. Everyone should have some sort of communication device. VHF radio is preferred, but a cell phone will do. Only one person of a pair needs a device. If people appear to get bored with the race and find that a rope swing looks like more fun, we inform the staff (and the boaters) that they've decided to leave the race.

I'll try to do it. I may have to take the finish line and paddle down from Hanover to keep it a short trip.

Y'know, the easiest thing might be to park at the Pembroke launch and monitor from there.

Thanks to all who will help! This year's t-shirt will have a sturgeon on it (like the 6 ft one found at the headwaters in June)

The race starts at 12:30. Everyone should have their boat unloaded by 11:00 so that I can shuttle you to and from Hanover.

I posted a bunch of pictures of the race on my blog, if anyone is interested. ( I think I met Pat at the Washington Street bridge)

Thanks to all the volunteers. It was a pretty quick race with no mishaps. A lot of us cut our kayaking teeth on the North River. It's nice to be able to pay back a little to help keep the river pristine for others.

Paddled past me around route 3 doing fine :)

He did a pretty nice job! If he used Gorrilla Duct Tape it would have looked like a CKV :P

The duct tape boat finished. Actually, when we were getting out in Hanover, they were pulling it out and discovered that a huge tangle of weeds had gotten stuck under some of the tape on the bottom and probably slowed them down a lot.
