I've been looking at a geolocator app for smartphones. I was thinking that it might be useful for our trips. The general idea is that you run this app on your phone while you're out paddling, and people can bring up a web page that will display your current location (and track). This might be useful for friends/family to know where you are on a trip for security reasons, or just for the rest of us to watch if we couldn't go.
Here's how it works:
You load the app on your smatrphone.
You run it and log in via your registered user name.
As long as it's running, it will update your information at the the database website.
People bring up the website and see where you are and where you've been.
For example:
http://www.greenalp.com/RealtimeTracker ... dlers&fs=1
If you zoom in all the way, you can see I wandered around my property a little while this was running. Obviously it's not terribly accurate, as it says that I'm currently typing this in while I'm located down near the street.
And you don't have to worry, because it stops tracking you once you shut down the app, so you don't have to worry about your wife discovering that PPR was at a strip joint.
I don't know if this app is only available for Android devices or for iPhones as well.
Here's the app:

And btw - everything is free.

Re: Remote monitoring
Looks like you made about three trips to the refrigerator for beer. How long was this running again?
Re: Remote monitoring
Pat,
Can you set it up to automatically create a trip report and post the pictures taken with it including a geotag of where the picture was taken? That would really be cool for a slacker like me that has fallen way behind in trying to write trip reports.
Of course I don't have a smart phone....yet...

Re: Remote monitoring
We'd only need one smartphone in the group for it to work.
