HANSON POND 8/22 IMPORTANT!

Post by Azane »

Folks, please check news regarding Hanson Pond area. Mosquitos, apparently caused a death in the South Shore/Hanson area and we are unsure if the pond has been "sprayed." For sure, if we go, there will be frequent applications of spray, especially closer to dusk. If anyone has any details re this... the pond/safety, etc. advise/post.

A follow-up: Abby called the "health services" in the Hanson area, They said that "evening outdoor events" at schools, etc have been cancelled because of this... The pond was sprayed earlier this year, but not recently. The "bug spray" is fine, but if you are in and out of the pond (rolling practice?)....we're sadly going to pass.

So at this point, is Tortoise the only person planning to go? I see the mosquito warning, but I really wanted some practice.
I heard that Weymouth was spraying last night (that's the town where the woman who died was from).
I guess that means I can't go outside now...

Is anyone else going?

Dear KK,

We have been going to Hanson Pond fairly regularly lately...but in the daytime (usually morning/mid day)....even on the weekends there may be swimmers, but only in the restricted area. I would guess the mosquito "risk" is greatly reduced in the day and I'm sure we will continue.

Good point about going in the daytime, Steve, to avoid the greatest risk.
If I didn't have a day job, it would be easier for me. But I guess weekends could work. I wonder what happened to that idea of doing ocean rescue practice??

I guess I will not be going tonight (sigh).

Yep, feel the same way. Whats not to like? Good people, warm water, free and willing "tips." Hanson has been a joy...we'll just have to do a "work-around" with the buggies!

I live in Hanson and we got a phone message from the town. This past weekend they re-sprayed the town because the governor expanded the area to be sprayed to include Plymouth county. (no infected mosquitoes had been found in Hanson). The death was in Norfolk county - a woman in her 80s. I hope this quells concerns. The pond is such a great venue for practice!
