PP(s)R - Thursday, Jan 9 - 7pm - Norwell

Post by pat »

Due to a few reasons, Mother Nature being at the top of the list, our first Post Paddling (season) Refreshment night will be delayed a week until January 9. If the Patriots can take a week off, so can we.

I propose Not Your Average Joe's in Norwell. It's conveniently located just a few feet off Route 3.
For GPSers: 111 Pond St, Norwell, MA
For others: Take Route 3 to Exit #14 (Rt 228 Rockland). Coming from the north, go left off the ramp. From the south, go right off the ramp. It will be on the right, immediately after the Sunoco station.

I'll reserve the table for 7pm. Of course, people are welcome to come early for Pre-Post-Paddling-Refreshment Refreshments.

Post here if you plan on attending.

It *was* a very good time, and great to see everyone.

The problem with the format is that you're sort of... I don't want to say "stuck with", but you're confined to a small group of conversation companions for the entire evening. I propose we find a place that has seats on a conveyor belt that slowly moves you around the table.

But seriously... I wonder if it might be worth investigating if we can't somehow arrange more of a party situation where there are small tall tables and the ability to stand and mill around.

It was good to see every one. Yes I would agree that I would enjoy more of a social hour that you can mill around and talk to EVERYONE. I think if the early birds show up around 2 pm and claim a section of the pub, like a hole corner. They should be able to hold the space if they drink enough and lay cash on the bar. Another option might be to change it from Thursday, typically a busy night, to a Monday or Tuesday night, typically real slow in restaurants. BYOB at the local VFW type function hall with a deli platter that we all though cash in for would work too. We enjoyed seeing everyone and hope to be able to attend another if my schedule permits.

Round tables (if available) seating 8-10 might help.
Also I like Ken R's idea to start drinking at 2, if we
Could find enough designated drivers

I'm also curious how people feel about the standard sit-down ordered dinner (like we've been doing), as opposed to something more community-based, like buffet style foods, or just a dozen pizzas laid out. Of course, considerations would have to be made for those with dietary restrictions, which would be fine.

My preference is the restaurant type setting where everyone can order what they want, nobody has to do setup or cleanup or food preparation and we just show up and leave without any work. Of course there is a price to pay for that, but if we're only gathering once a month instead of once a week, the extra cost of a nicer meal should not be too unreasonable.

I'm wondering how many attendees you need to get a separate room for a few hours at a restaurant? I know Abington Ale House and Abington Depot have rooms, but I don't know what requirements they have for using them. It would be great if you only needed 15 - 20, but I don't know if that is enough. I'll try to ask some people around town that might know. I'm afraid if I just call the business, I'll get the company line of a minimum of 40 or something. But if I ask some regulars that know the owners, maybe I can get an exemption from the minimum since my family has done so much volunteer work around town.

I wouldn't be so sure. If you're talking a Saturday afternoon in May, then maybe. But on a week night a lot of those rooms are probably sitting empty, and they'd rather have a group of 20 in there than have it vacant.

Ok, I'm stuck here at the computer all day, so I did a little Google research and found that the Abington Ale House has a nice website listing their minimum requirements to use the function room and it's based on the amount you spend and was a little beyond what our bill was the other night. They also require seating numbers and a deposit in advance. It would require a little more planning and commitment than we're accustomed to for a simple night out. I've filmed a few events there it's a little more upscale than we're looking for anyway. Here is their FAQ web page with pictures of the nice function room: http://abingtonalehouse.com/index.cfm/ehInformation

The Abington Depot is a nice old former train station where the "townies" go before and after events like high school football and basketball games. It's not a big building and their function room is upstairs. You're probably right Pat, that the owner or manager would probably be happy to have a group of twenty come in on a slow winter evening. They don't seem to have a website...maybe there's a business opportunity for you there too...

Thursdays Jan 23, Jan 30, Febr 6 and Febr 15 are the dates for the Audubon Winter lecture series. Lots of interesting topics for us kayakers: how to dream, how to plan, how to pack and how to navigate. On those dates maybe we should get together early, or hang out late. The times are 7-9:00 pm in Marshfield.

Just want to add my feelings on the Thursday Dinner Discussions,
I agree with Norm and prefer to have the opportunity to order from a menu. Seating at round tables or in a separate room where we could circulate among ourselves would be a real plus.
I am not in favor of changing the day we meet as I've made a number of arrangements that allow me to be free to leave work early and get to Hingham for paddling and PPR. and these are still in place for our winter get togethers.

Hi Everyone

The Hearth & Kettle on RT 18 in Weymouth has a room off the main dining room that I use for business meetings on Tuesdays. The manager says we could have a meeting there on Thursday evening once a month. They have a menu to order off of or you can have a buffet type meal with apps or whatever we want.
They have square and oblong tables that can seat 4-6 each or put them together for more. They can set up in any order.

He said they don't need minimum and the room has a door to close us off from the non-paddling public. My morning meeting has 40+ people attending so seating is not an issue.

Kick it around and let me know if there is any interest.

Thanks Gary. That's another convenient location close to a highway...much better than my thoughts about going to the Abington Depot. The Depot is not an easy place to find.

With the Audobon Winter Lecture series on 4 Thursday nights in a row, I'm not sure there will be interest in a February PPR if lots of Turkeys attend. I think I'll start asking on the other thread how many are going to the lecture series.

If people do want to get together in February, the 20th is the first open Thursday after the lectures.
