Who is going to the Audubon winter program this coming Thursday night about planning your own kayak adventure?

I'll be there.

Would anyone like to go out for dinner before the program this time? I propose 5:00 or 5:30pm at the British Beer Company on route 139 in Pembroke - the address is 15 Columbia Road, near where 139 splits off from route 53. That is 6.5 miles from the Audobon North River Wildlife Sanctuary. (I have a craving for British style fish and chips.) Speak up if this place is not good. I haven't been there since we did a winter PPR there many years ago.

Hi All, I'm looking forward to this one. We will spend some time talking group management and decision making as well. Facilitating trips with peers and folks with varying skill levels can be tricky, we've all experienced it. We will share some tools and ideas on some ways to do just that. I'll have some copies of basic notes to share but, you might want to bring a notebook as well. Audubon prefers pre-registration but we welcome folks to do walk-in registration, just can't accept credit cards at the door.

Have fun at the BBC.

That is awesome!

When are you all planning on getting there. 5:00 or 5:30 pm?

There is a secret squirrel or two that have told me they are planning to come tonight also. One squirrel definite for BBC and possibly the seminar, the other just possible for the seminar...

I'm not sure whether I'll go straight to the BBC from work or go home first - might decide by how bad traffic is and how late I get out of work. If I go straight there, I'll probably arrive at 5:00. I'll make sure to be there by 5:30. I think we'll need to be done and leaving the restaurant by 6:45 to get to the seminar on time.

Shall we call and reserve a table for 6 people at 5:30? Or do you think it's quiet enough that early on a winter Thursday night that getting a table will be no problem.

Sure, go ahead and make the reservation Norm. I have no clue how busy they are on a Thursday night.

Hi Bea,

This Squirrel will be there for 5:00.
I will also be at the seminar.
I confirmed with Doug that there is plenty of room if I wanted to do a walk-in tonight.

Table for 6 people at 5:30 reserved under "Norm". I'll probably get there at about 5:00.

Should be no problem to add more if anyone else wants to join us. Sounds like they won't be that busy.

Thanks All, for your participation last night. You were sports for giving the "No Doze Leadership Exercise" a go. We missed you Jordan, sorry you had to work late. Here is that list of decision making traps we looked at without much time to review.

Familiarity - Believing a familiar situation is safe or controllable and ignoring evidence that the situation is different.
Acceptance - A tendency to make a decision that others will like.
Consistency - Making choices consistent with an earlier decision, despite evidence suggesting a different choice might be better.
Social proof - Assuming that because others did it, it’s a good choice.
Confirmatory bias - Ignoring observations because they don’t fit a known pattern or desired result.
Recency effect - A tendency to give importance to recent information or events.
Expert halo - The expectation that someone knowledgeable in one situation can make a good decision in a new or different situation.
Mind set - A decision that may look analytical but is biased by personal choices or desired alternative.
Unproven assumptions - Accepting plausible but unproven information as a basis of a decision.
Probability estimation - A tendency to overestimate the likelihood of an event because it is dramatic.
Illusory correlation - Assuming an isolated event is representative of a pattern or class of events.
Risk polarization - A tendency for groups to become risk-prone or risk-adverse and then take significantly more or less risk than individuals would.
Attribution theory - A tendency for groups to make riskier decisions than an individual.
Support theory - Because of greater detail in a particular presentation, placing emphasis on that evidence and allowing it to influence a decision.
Information cascade - Bad information, imbedded in a thought process, influencing ideas without correction over time.

Hope to see some of you next week!
