Early Morning, South Shore, Sat 09/06 anyone?

Post by guitbit »

I was thinking of taking out my recently acquired folbot greenland Saturday morning for some recreational paddlintg. I'd like to get started early, 8am or so at the latest and get back to shore by 10-10:30. It's a tandem so if you just want to bring a PFD that is fine. I'll have everything else but let me know as there is only one seat available. Anyone have a good suggestion for a place to do this? I was thinking I'd like to try some reasonably sized inland flat-water, but I'm up for suggestions.

Where are you starting from? I don't want to suggest someplace that's a 50 mile drive for you.

I'm in Rockland. I want to stay south of the split and north of the bridge to avoid any sort of traffic getting in and out. I'm good for anywhere from Plymouth to Randolf so long as I don't need to take the highway.

For a large inland body of water, Monponsett pond might be a good choice. Fairly large, and lots of parking next to the launch.

The North River is always a good place. I'd recommend the Union Street launch. Based on the tides for that day, 9:30 would probably be the optimal time to launch, but 8:00 shouldn't be a problem. Tide will be flowing in for a while and will change direction at the launch at approximately 10:30. You could paddle upstream with the current and then against it on the way back, but it shouldn't be too strong.

Cool, thanks. I had considered Monponsett but I've driven by it and it didn't look all that interesting from a kayak-exploring standpoint (please correct me if I'm wrong). Others I was considering are Long Pond, Billington Sea, and my old standby Aaron River Reservoir. However the last time I was at Aaron River Resvr. the water level was getting pretty low and there are a bunch of snags (slightly more dangerous for a stretch-frame kayak like mine). But it is very interesting with lots of nooks and crannies. Best of all it's nearly deserted on most days as you need a key to get in. I had been thinking about the north river but I'd rather go there when I have more time to estimate the current and and how it will effect my travel times. Well, unless someone goes along that is more familiar with it and can point out any potential hazards. I do need to get back by around 10:40/10:50 so I have time to break down the kayak as I have another obligation in the afternoon.

But thank you very much Pat. I do appreciate it and will probably be trying all of these over what's left of the summer/fall.

No, you're not wrong about the interest factor of Monponsett. What it has going for it is the parking and a very handy restaurant for PPR.

Ah yes, I do definitely consider that. However tomorrow my PPR is somewhat restricted anyhow. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Ok, so I guess I'm going to Aaron River Reservoir. If anyone wants to join I'll be at the Wampatuck campground office at 8:00 AM. Look for the creepy 50-ish guy with the 70s porn stache in the 90s Corolla with no visible boat. Hope to see you there.

Wait, that sounds creepy. Oh well, hope to see you there. And now you know why it's so deserted.
