Hull Snow Row - March 7, 2015

Post by norm »

I don't know if I will participate this year, but below is the information about the Hull Snow Row for 2015.

36th Annual Snow Row
Time: Saturday, March 7, 2015
Race Start: 11:00 AM
Coxswains' Meeting: 10:15 AM
Registration: 8:30 - 10:00 AM
Location: Windmill Point Boathouse, 185 Main Street, Hull, MA
Cost: $25 Racers; Beach Spectators Free

The 2015 Snow Row has a 11:00 am start! The race covers a 3 3/4 mile triangular course starting and ending off the beach at the tip of Hull, at Windmill Point. Huge crowds gather to share in the excitement of the wild, one-of-a-kind LeMans-style start, unpredictable weather, and huge gathering of gorgeous boats and athletes (over 100 boats participating!). Entirely within view of the Boathouse, the event is as much of a thrill for spectators as for participants - a rare opportunity to see, up close, rowers of all ages from all over New England, New York, and along the East Coast, and their stunning array of wooden pulling boats -- peapods, dories, wherries, whitehalls, ocean shells, kayaks, pilot gigs, captain's gigs, and Irish currachs.

The race has five boat categories: workboats, livery boats, coxed boats, ocean kayaks, and ocean shells. A few notes to all race participants:
1) all boats must carry PFDs, bailers, and whistles
2) all coxed boats must pre-register and begin the race bow on the beach
3) the HLM Race Committee reserves the right to cancel the race or keep individual boats from setting forth due to weather conditions or rower skill level.

Back by popular demand, the Snow Row Spectator Boat, Boston Harbor Cruise catamaran Aurora, is a perfect spot to follow the wild and wooly Snow row from start to finish. Boarding begins at 10:00 am at Pemberton Pier in Hull with the boat shoving off at 10:45 to witness the one-of-a-kind LeMans racing start. Spectator boat tickets are available on line or available on race day at the pier.

After watching the excitement of the Snow Row, come to the Lifesaving Museum, a mile from the boathouse, which will be open throughout the day with free admission to view our annual Sea & Sky Art Show, before it closes on March 7. For more information, please contact Ed McCabe at the Hull Lifesaving Museum, 781-925-5433.

D'oh, going to be out of town this year. Always a great time, if a little chilly.

Are they going to have an ice breaker there to clear a path?

As John said, the Snow Row has been postponed. I guess they couldn't arrange for an ice-breaker.

Here is the info and reason from the organizers along with a picture of the bay that they sent in their email announcement:

Sliding Seat Rowers - New Rules as of 2012

HLM's 2016 Snow Row, has been rescheduled to Saturday, March 21, 2015, the first day of spring! Record breaking snow fall, high winds, and extreme temperatures have clobbered our peninsula leaving behind immense mountains of snow and much of Boston Harbor icebound. All this ice and snow is bound to melt eventually so we're crossing our fingers that those few extra weeks will find our shores in better shape.

Did anyone make it out to see the Snow Row yesterday? I was down and out with a cold and forgot all about it.
