Re: Navigation lights
There is a lot of good information here but also some that is slightly incorrect. I have not seen anyone show up with a motorized kayak or 22’ Kayak, so I will assume all the Turkeys are in person-powered-vessels or SAIL powered less than 7 meter.
Here is the rule # 25 section D part i and ii:
(d) (i) A sailing vessel of less than 7 meters in length shall, if
practicable, exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of
this Rule, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an
electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be
exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision.
(ii) vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this Rule
for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand
an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall
be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision.
The important thing to remember is that Every boat on the water does not need to know you are there, just the ones that you MIGHT affect their path. Blind them with a flash light they will know you are there. Put on a light show or display the wrong lights they may think you are in distress and BLAST FULL SPEED at you to save your life. If they do come to save you, because you have incorrect lights they may be mad and call you lots of names and it will continue to give kayakers a bad wrap.
