New to kayaking and wild turkey

Post by keeponswimming »

Just received my first kayak yesterday. Looking forward to learning from board members and hopefully joining some trips.

I bought a 12' sit on, so may be more appropriate for river and lake trips? Maybe some of the sheltered harbors? Hopefully there are some trips like this to join. Thanks!

Welcome keeponswimming!

We have become mostly an open-water sea kayaking group where most of the trips that are posted require a longer sit-inside boat with bulkheads front and rear for flotation. (The longer boat is needed to be able to keep up with the group.) Most trips require a good level of proficiency at rescue skills to ensure the safety of the whole group.

We get together at a pond on Thursday evenings every other week to work on safety and paddling skills and that would be a good time to come out and meet the regular attendees if you can make it. The location and time is regularly posted in the "Skills and Training" forum each week.

There have been attempts in past years to encourage people to post easier, shorter trips but with little success.
