Cape trip - Sunday, 7/24
There are a few places on the cape that I'd like to hit, and I think I'd like to take a shot at one of them this Sunday. I'd say the top two on the list are the areas around Washburn Island and Osterville Grand Island.
The tides on the South Cape are very wierd. High tide in Falmouth will be at 2:10. High Tide at Popponesset Island, five miles up the coastline, is at 4:30. I don't understand the astrophysics there, but Washburn Island in in Falmouth might be the better choice, based on the time.
It might behoove us to paddle on the early side of the tide (11-3) and try to get a jump on the traffic leaving the cape.

Here are two possible flavors of the Washburn Island day trip:

The advantage of the 7-mile trip is that we'd see more of the coastline of Washburn Island, including the camping areas. The 10 mile trip would give us more paddling, and we'd get a chance to see Hamblin Pond.

Vineyard Sound Caution
Pat:
The conditions in Waquoit Bay are generally fairly benign as it's fairly well protected on all sides.
However if you do the circumnavigation of Washburn you will be out in Vineyard Sound for a bit and if the wind is kicking out of the prevailing southwesterly direction the sea conditions could be, well let's just say "very interesting"! If there is much of a shore break there WILL be a rip current along the beach on the Vineyard Sound side. Vineyard Sound is notorious for tricky current. You might want to check out a copy of "Eldrigde Tide and Pilot" for accurate info about the tides and currents
You'll need a full skirt for this one - I hope it arrives on time.

What does everyone think about the 1-mile segment through Nantucket Sound? I've got mixed feelings. I don't want to do anything stupid, but we're always erring on the side of caution, and sometime before I die, I'd like to see chop that's over 6". Perhaps heading out into the Sound isn't the smartest move, but I really don't know.
If we think that doing the Sound is dangerous and foolhardy, here are a couple of alternate routes. Each is approx 7 miles.

I think the first one looks like the Grinch and the second one looks like a guy tying to get out of a cloth sack.
Personally.... and I'm sure this won't surprise all of you, but I think we should do it. If we never get exposed to any freakin' chop we're never going to know what the hell it is.
None of us wants to die, for that matter, none of us wants to even tip over. But we all know how to help each other and if there are at least 4 of us I think we should get crazy and do it.
All in favor type AYE!

I like this discussion. We got liberals on one side (Let's go for it James Dean), conservatives on the other (we must be prudent George W), fence sitters (let's look at the situation when we reach it). The Wild Turkeys have more of a democracy than IRAQ. I think this group is growing not only size but in intellect.
I can't tell right now what I will be doing Sunday, but I hope that my plans are the same as yours.

At the very least we can be sensible about it, check the ocean conditions, wind, etc., and if we get to the ocean and it looks to be beyond our skill level, we can make alternate plans.
I did say let's get crazy and do it. I never said let's throw caution to the wind. I'm eager not foolish.

Ok - here are the directions to the launch. I copied these out of a book.
From Rt. 6 in Sandwich, take exit 2, signed for Rt. 130, Sandwich and Mashpee. Follow Rt 130 south 9.1 mi to rt 28 and turn right. At 2.3 miles you come to the Mashpee rotary, where you go half-way around and continue on Rt 28 toward Falmouth. At 5.8 miles you pass the entrance, left, to the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve headquarters and visitor center. At 6 miles you cross the Childs River and then turn immediately left onto Whites Landing Rd., a paved road just past Edwards Boat Yard. Go about 100 yards to a town landing with a boat ramp, left, on the west bank of the Childs River. Park in the lot on the corner of Rt. 28 and Whites Landing Rd., just west of Edwards Boat Yard.

My map shows a couple of shortcuts along Rt 130 that aren't included in the directions. It should take approx 20 minutes to reach the launch after crossing the canal.
Let's meet at the launch at 11:00. If anyone wants to meet sooner and caravan to the launch, talk about it here.

Hows about we meet at the Christmas tree shop again?
The Christmas Tree Shop can be problematic. As you get off exit 6 in Plymouth, Stop & Shop is immediately on your right at the first light. How about we meet there, as close as possible to the street? Say, 10:00?

Man, I'd love to join you guys for this one. My sister has a place in New Seabury and there's a public launch point on one of the inlets over on that side...so I checked the Waquoit area out several weeks ago. Looks great.
However:
1) I'm planning to do some camping on Washburn with my son later in the Summer or early September.
2) As a novice, I'm pretty sure that I would be the weakest link in the group. Still working on an effective paddling technique...and I'd probably end up holding everyone back. Nelson and Dave can attest to that from our excursion out to Worlds End and the Weir River a few weeks back.
Someone please take lots of shots...I expect a full report.

I'm ok with that as long as I can secure my boat in a way that I can be comfortable with.
What would be the planned set up?

I figured you could just hang onto it out your window.
I've got the wooden racks on my roof. I put the kayak upside-down and strap it down to eyebolts bolted to the wood. Then I tie down the front and sometimes rear to bolts bolted to the frame under the bumper. You can check it out when we meet if you like.

It's here! It's here!
I've got a lovely skirt which happens to go nicely with my bag and shoes.
