Awesome Ron. Now you can teach me. I was all ready to head down last night but when I got home the kitchen drawer was on the counter and need the rail fixed.
I really could use a skills session too.

Skills Session This Thursday 8/16

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings All,

This season's skills sessions have been well attended and a great success. Many people have participated, gained a lot of experience / practice, and had some fun too!

It is likely there will only to be another 2 to 3 sessions left in the season after this coming Thursday, given the dwindling daylight as August flys by. So 8/30 or 9/13 are likely to be the last skills sessions for the year.

Of course for those of you who keep threatening to come but haven't been able to make it  , the offer still stands to utlize another evening or venue to accomodate those who have not been able to make the Hanson sessions. Just post a suggestion and I'm certain there be participation.

I want to thank everyone who has participated and contributed to the sessions this year. This great outlet was all due to Mark who started these sessions a few seasons back, and created a weekly evening of practice and fun many look forward to each week.

Long story longer, c'mon down and get some practice in, because the fall brings some of the most spectacular paddling in the year. Don't miss the oppportunity to paddle this fall by not being prepared. I hope to see some of the many new Wild Turkey Members that have recently signed up.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Jordan - will this week's session be back in Hanson?

Hoping I'll be able to make it. If so, I'll be going solo. Kath is still on the mend.

Hi Lance,

I hope Kathy's shoulder is healing quickly. I look forward to seeing you Thursday. Try to plan attending the PPR after too if your schedule permits.

Have a great weekend.

So back to the flat water this week?

OK, I'll have to bring that beer can, so I can work on the new parlor trick.

We can practice those other useful skills like crawling out to the bow of your boat, kissing it, and then crawling back in.

Oh, and let's do some work on the scoop rescue, right Lance?

DOH!

Sorry, Jordan - didn't pay attention to the subject of your post. Perhaps there have been too many PPR's in my past!

Looking forward to Thursday.

I was thinking of coming to Skills session Thursday night, from work in Braintree. I took the following directions off Mapquest - they start from Route 3 South. For those of you who have been there many times, do these directions seem right?? Any changes, additions, deletions? Joyce

Take exit 13 for RT-53 toward RT-123/Norwell/Hanover
Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Pembroke/RT-53 S
Turn right at RT-53 S/Washington St
Turn right at Old Washington St
Turn left at Silver St
Turn left at Main St
Turn right at Hanover St/RT-139
Turn left at Center St
Continue straight onto Broadway
Continue on Winter St
Turn left at Liberty St/RT-14/RT-58
Continue to follow RT-58
Turn left at Camp Kiwanee Rd 0.2 mi

Joyce: It is more direct if you get off at Exit 14:

Take exit 14 for RT-228 N toward Nantasket 0.2 mi
Turn left at Hingham St/RT-228 0.1 mi
Turn right at Pond St 0.3 mi
Head south on Pond St toward Colby St 0.6 mi
Continue on Whiting St 1.8 mi
Continue on Pleasant St 0.8 mi
Turn left at Circuit St 1.2 mi
Turn right at Winter St 1.1 mi
Turn right at Broadway 0.2 mi
Continue on Winter St 1.8 mi
Turn left at Liberty St/RT-14/RT-58
Continue to follow RT-58 1.0 mi
Turn left at Camp Kiwanee Rd 0.2 m

Hi Norm

Glad to see you'll be joining us. It should be entertaining, as Mark has some personalized abuse for me to try.

This is my forth season attending Mark's Skills Sessions, and I'm still only 50% through my list of skills I want to become proficient at.

See you Thursday.

If you are in the Braintree/Weymouth area the simplest way is to take route 58 which starts across from the Factory Paint store on rt. 18 in Weymouth. Stay on 58 for about 12 miles. Camp Kiwanee is on rt. 58 in Hanson. Once you pass the town hall (which sits on a hill in front of a pond) go about another mile and look for the sign on the left and a one lane road back into the woods.

It's 58 all the way, where as all other ways require several turns on various streets and it's very easy to get lost.

Thanks for the tip, Skip. Unfortunately it may be a moot point. My car died on the way to work today and is sitting at the car dealership. I'll be picking up my car in Norwood after work tomorrow, and by the time I get home, load my yak, and drive to Hanson, y'all might just be downin your third Sam Adams at the PPR. IF, however, things go quicker, I B there.

Last Session is likely to be 9/13/07

Post by kayakerjnj »

With daylight dwindling and temperatures now falling short of the high's were enjoying it is my sad task to schedule our last skills session of the season.

That leaves two more till the end of the season for Hanson.

A week from this coming Thursday, 8/30/07, and likely our last pond gathering on 9/13/07

We usually end the season with a skills recital, that usually includes some edged 180 degree boat turns with no paddle after the initial sweep, and of course our end of season ROLL OFF!

Last year Dr. Smoke, that sleeper, he wowed everyone with 16 Rolls in one minute! After all his trainging and paddling this season we should up is forecast to 18

The last night of the skill sessions in the season is always a blast. It would be great to see everyone who participated at the pond this season to bid it farewell for the season, and celebrate everyone's hard earned progress this year in style at JR's.

Cheers,

Jordan

Rescues, braces, and rolls! Oh my!

We had them all and lots of them last night.

Congratulations to Linda Burke for nailing her roll last night! At least 5 that we saw and probably more she sneaked in while we were flailing away on something else.

Amy who once again came all the way from the Worcester area, popped off her first wet exits in style.

Nelson honored (gassed) us with his presence and his stoggie from the beach  Heal up fast buddy! We need you paddling instead of puffing

It was another productive and fun evening at Kiwanee!

The last skills session for the season will be on 9/13.

Have a great Labor day weekend everyone.

Cheers,

Jordan

Thanks. The suction mount works great. I also picked up a mini tripod at REI that I'm going to try.

Just loaded up my boat. Even though I have not been to ONE single skills session this year, I plan on making the last one - even if it's just to tool around the water while y'all are dunkin and rollin. If you want, I'll be happy to clap when someone does an especially good roll. C ya tomorrow,

Unless I get a last minute reprieve on a church committee meeting, I will NOT be able to get down to Hanson tonight. :x

Still hoping, but its looking bleak. Too bad. I was intending to open the festivities with a little comic relief by making a go at rolling myself. You'll just have to direct your ridicule at someone else. :P

Have a great time.
