Boston Harbor 8/20 - Hangman's, Peddocks, Rainsford
Dave and I have been talking about doing another Boston Harbor trip on Saturday August 20th and these are the two possible routes we've talked about:
<center>
<img src="http://kayaking.pidgeoncoop.com/images/wollaston-peddocks.jpg">
</center>
The plan is to meet across from Tony's Clam Shoppe at Wollaston Beach at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning.
The main destination is Portuguese Cove at Peddocks Island with a possible stop at Hangman's and/or Rainsford on the way. On the return trip we'll head by Moon Island or Nut Island depending on the route we choose. I expect this trip to take somewhere in the vicinity of 4-5 hrs depending on how much time we spend exploring the islands.
Anyone who wants to join us should have experience in limited exposure to moderate wind and waves. Able to easily wet exit and perform a paddle float rescue. Able to perform an assisted rescue on another paddler. Winds less than 10 knots and distances less than 10 miles and be able to paddle at a decent pace (approx 3mph) for 15 or 20 minutes. Touring boats with bow and stern flotation required.
Please post here if you're interested.

Bring a lunch
There are a couple of nice breaks on the trip to stop and have a bite to eat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the weather. A day like today would be perfect.
Saturday
Wish I was free to go but...
BTW your planned point of landing on Peddocks is some distance from any of the real interesting stuff you could explore there. Land a little further up Portugese Cove (toward's Hull Gut) and see if you can find the old Ft. Andrews store house. Bring a flash light and digicam with a flash - I've got a six pack of Harpoon Summer Beer for the first one to post a pic of the battleship mural on this website (hint: it's painted on a wall somewhere in the store house).

Beach Closed
Haven't heard anything about beach closings, but if it is closed, there will just be better parking.
This is a confirmation. I'll be there. If my plans change, I will call you Birdseye. I don't have internet access at home for the time being so I will send both Birdseye and Dave my home phone in a personal email in case the bigger plans change.

Great trip!
I'll have a report and some pics soon. I zipped everything up, but the file is still 26megs, so I don't think I can email it?
Nelson's Pics are in the gallery (3 pages of pics). Enjoy

We had a great time, experienced some very interesting seas and got one hell of a workout. Can't wait to do it again.
Here's a short, small video I took of Hull Gut from Peddock's. If you squint just right you can see the current ripping through there.

Nice trip, nice pics, nice try!
Looks like you guys had a great trip, Hangman's, Peddocks and Rainsford. Must of been a long day! Just as well that I had the day planned with my grandson, as my deck contractor decided to show up two days early to do the destruction prior to the new construction. No way I could have made 11, as it was we didn't get to the tennis courts until after 2!
Nelson: nice try with the spotter's plaque, but that's not the mural. Did you climb the up the spotter's tower (have they cut back the brush so you can see anything?)?
Need more mural hints - its not on the ground floor of the store house (which is why you need a flash light), it's hand "painted" (might be pastels, but I slept thru art history in school so I'm not sure), it's a single "ship of the line", the name of the battleship is part of the painting.

Craig,
You can't get to it anymore. They have fences up blocking all the roads and all of the bottom floor doors and windows are boarded up. I asked one of the Rangers there if they could take me to it but they said even if we went there we couldn't get in.
I tried though.

Great pictures guys! (And thanks for taking care of that, Nelson.) I'm sorry I missed it. The Blueberry Hill season is ending, and I definitely want to be on the next trip. (And I'm pretty sure I can speak for Ron and Chip about that, too.)
I just got the trip report from Dave, and I'll have that up soon.

Excellent report Dave and great pics. Those ocean shots really looked like it felt out there.
Although the trip from Rainsford to Wollaston with the receding tide and wind at our backs was challenging physically, the trip from Peddock's to Rainsford was the hardest. The waves were very confused and my skeg didn't want to go down (again!!!). Dave couldn't feel any pebbles in there so we just paddled on. I'd say I paddled 3/4 of the way paddling only on my right side. By the time we were nearing Rainsford I tried the skeg again an it went down (it's possible that it would have always gone down but I felt resistance and didn't want to force it).
One other thing that happenened on the way back. We were hailed down by a boater who's anchor was caught on a rope and he couldn't free it. He had a couple of young boys on the boat and asked for our assistance. Tired and a little concerned about the conditions, we were a bit hesitant but seeing the kids onboard helped with the decision. Todd and I tried to raft up together for stability but floated past the boat before we could do anything. I back paddled and gave the guy on the boat one end of my paddle so he could hold me in place and he have me a very sharp filet knife. 1 1/2 swipes of the knife and he was free and very thankful. He offered us a Gatoraid but at this point all we wanted to do was get back.
I liked Hangman's the best. I don't know why, there wasn't much there. It was just a little rocky outcrop but it brought up feelings of what it might be like to be marooned at sea. The only downside was the stench of sea gull poop (which I swear I could still smell the next day while working on my photos) and an old rusty wheelbarrow littering the North Shore of the Island. Peddocks was nice but too much like civilization. And Rainsford was a trip, complete with Tom the Ambassador, holding a box of Franzia wine at his side and pointing us in the direction of all the island's points of interest. There is no doubt that this guy loves this island (and sort of feels like it's his)
This is definitely a trip I'd like to do again (or something very similar).
Great time guys.

The boater!
Darned! I knew I was forgetting something! Kayakers helping out power boaters in trouble is a very cool detail of the trip. (It's usually the other way around I think.) We definitely got a little bit of everything. It was a great trip, looking forward to getting out there again.
Dave and Nelson,
I had a good time, we did alot of hard paddling on the most turbulent conditions I have been in but I didn't panic with you 2 along. The waves were coming from behind so I wasn't always prepared. Met Tom and viewed his Island (Rainsford), viewed Peddocks from up close, thought for a moment while on Hangman's about being left there to die by pirates and how isolating that might be.
Foggy to start, cleared a bit, looked stormy at the end. Very enjoyable.

The Battleship Mural
I found these pictures of the battleship mural from a spring 2003 trip to Peddock's. Peddock's is more fun either pre-season or post-season when there are no tourists and no rangers. You can go anywhere you want, if you're willing to take the risk!
