Weekend skill session - POSTPONED to Sunday, June 13
Weekend skill session - POSTPONED to Sunday, June 13
John Martinsen (johnnysmoke) and I would like to hold a skill session 2 Sundays from now, June 6, at New Inlet/North River. This would be for all levels, from beginner to advanced. We envision a float out to the spit, staying on the inside where it is calm and protected. Here we might cover:
Pre-launch topics - beach briefings, group cohesiveness, safety, paddle signals
Forward strokes, bracing, rescue practice
Rolling (if desired)
For those who are interested in trying it, we could take a group outside the spit to explore any of:
surf launch and landing
paddling through waves
surfing (we should be so lucky)
rough water rescue (contact tow, re-entry in waves)
It's a nice place for a picnic too!
If weather does not permit practice at this location, we will default to Hingham or Cohasset, both of which are more protected.
We have in mind a general overview of all these skills, rather than pursuing any one in depth. We also hope that those who know skills will share with those who want to learn. For example, if you know how to do a rescue, perhaps you will volunteer to show someone else how. But maybe someone else will show you how to do a high brace.
Any interest? Let us know....

I am interested and have never paddled there.

Low tide is just about 1pm, which would influence the timing. Hope to join you.

Yes, figured to ride the tide out sometime around 11, then ride it in later in the afternoon. Nothing written in stone at this point.
Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
I'm definitely interested as well and will be more than happy to help where I can.
Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
I would also be very interested, and possibly my son (Just graduated from college and at home for a little while while job hunting--he has done some kayaking at Lake Tahoe, but never had any 'formal' instruction.)
I am also fairly new to kayaking, bought a used WS Tempest this year, used to do canoeing. Been on one outing so far this year with AMC in Welfleet Harbor, but need to learn rescue techniques.

Glad for all the responses. People should think about what they want to work on for this skills training, and if you don't have a helmet, see if you can borrow one. I have one extra large helmet if anyone needs it. Looking forward ro Sunday...

I believe that I may have an extra helmet or two.

actually, a helmet is needed only if you intend to go into the surf zone on the outside of the spit. If you wish to stay inside the spit, or only go out to deep water, no helmet is needed.
Details on this skill session soon to come!

Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
Maybe people can swap off the extra helmets if more want to try the surfzone. The others can practice skills in the safer areas.

The main thing is that it fits you comfortably & securely. I do like helmets that have a retention strap(like most bicycle helmets have) at the back of your head.
Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
Not at all. I started out with a Pro-Tec much like that. But if you don't want to buy just yet, those of us who have extras can bring them.

Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
Checking the weather/surf forecast for Sunday, looks like typical summer weather, with typical 2-foot surf. Very user-friendly.
Let's plan on meeting at the parking area at 10:30 a.m., to launch no later than 11. Low tide is at 1:30, so we can float out, do some flatwater practice, then go outside (or not) as the tide starts to come in. This makes it a little safer, nobody gets washed out to sea, and the surf is at its gentlest at low tide. And we get a ride with the current when we come back to the parking lot.
I'd like to encourage newbies to attend. It's a good chance to get to know your boat, develop some basic skills with good habits right from the beginning. And anyone who goes on group trips can benefit from learning about the skills associated with traveling with a group on the water. John has had a lot of experience teaching new folks during his time as a NOLS instructor.
Bring a picnic lunch, and dress for immersion. For me, this will probably mean drysuit and hood, but I'm a weenie about cold water. Do expect to be IN the water, as part of rescue practice. Bring a helmet if you have one; bring extras if you have them, to share with others. Helmet required for surf zone only.
Perhaps John will add to this infomercial....

If you're doing rescues in lumpy water (not just surf) helmets can be reassuring both to the swimmer and rescuer. I'll try and find our old ones.

Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
I thought the shedule for Sunday could go something like this:
In the parking lot before getting on the water.
Group Travel: How to travel together on the water in a group.
-Paddle signals.
-Briefing the group on the route of travel. On a travel day include mileage, estimated time of travel, break spots, potential hazards, weather expectations. Similar for a play spot day.
-Identifying potential hazards on the route; ie boat traffic, areas of rough water, rocks, currents...
-Setting up a point and sweep boat, and having the group, or "pod" travel between these two
-Adjusting pace for members of the group.
-Picking out landmarks for the pod to head towards, and conveying these points to all members of the pod.
Paddle together to the protected side of the spit.
Rescues: Basic t-rescue and perhaps the Eskimo bow rescue.
-Having other members of the pod "pod up" while the rescue is being performed, and keeping an eye out for hazards.
-Contact and short tows
Lunch
-Introduce the low brace and stern rudder.
-Surf zone safety.
-Outfitting a boat for the surf zone.
Surf side. For newer paddlers, getting them side surfed in the soup zone is a great way to get a feel for the low brace. Similarly, paddle back and for parallel to the waves in the soup zone is a great way to get a feel for how the boat reacts to waves, "bracing" with just hips....
Surf Zone: Fun and safety in the surf zone.
-In case of capsize, stay on the ocean side of the boat!
-How to catch a wave.
-Low braces and stern rudders are your friends.
-Surf zone etiquette
-Stay out of each others way, play nicely with the locals and swimmers.
-Set up a traffic pattern for the surf zone, so people aren't blocking potential rides
-Rescues in the surf zone.
Travel back together in a pod to the launch.
PPR!!
If I've left anything out or there's something you want to add, let me know.

Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
Sorry to be the skunk at the garden party here...but....
Sunday
Showers likely in the morning...then showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Patchy fog in the morning. Highs in the mid 70s. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph...increasing to south 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 70 percent.
As this is a training session, the possibility of T-storms might not be such an issue. I don't know. I might be joining the fun after a morning commitment...all depends if I can get out of it in time. Weekends are just too busy...

Re: Weekend skill session - Sunday, June 6
John and I consulted about the weather and agreed that this was not what we had envisioned for this skill session. We'd like to postpone it by one week. Would everyone still be able to make it on Sunday, June 13?

Not sure if I can make it or not...last day of Cape Walk--if I have too many blisters, this sounds like a much better alternative than walking 11-12 miles in sand at Provincetown!

I've been watching the thread, bummed I couldn't make it tomorrow. Been itching to practice with the ski in launching. Definitely would be interested in 6/13.

Ditto.
But there was ZERO surf today. So next week is likely to be better that way.
