Wednesday Night 8/18/2010 Skills Session @ Hingham Harbor

Post by lora925 »

Thursday nights in Hanson are not always good for folks and the tide and weather happen to be favorable for a skills session at Hingham Harbor this week :) So please post below if you would like to join me starting at 6 p.m.

See the directions section at:
http://www.wtpaddlers.org/thursnight.html
If you're unfamiliar with the location.

There will be a short meeting on the beach about 5 minutes before launch where we can decide if we want to split off into smaller focus groups and discuss what skills we would like to cover. For example, I want to work on bracing and rolling (big surprise). Someone else might want to work on power strokes or something else. So lets make a plan before getting on the water to ensure we get the most out of the session.

The water will be colder than the fresh water pond sessions so please dress accordingly.

If your not interested in working on any skills and would rather just simply go for a paddle, that is an option too. We can split off a group or two for that as well, perhaps a group for recreational kayakers and another for sea kayaking types, the more the merrier!

Lora - I'm going to try to join you. It looks like the weather for Wednesday evening is better than it may be on Thursday and I want to make sure to get out on a weeknight this week. I may bring both short and long boats. I want to work on the outfitting of my Dagger GTX now that I can claim it as my own since my son fit in the LL Hoss much better. Maybe I can remember to bring a drill to make a hole in your skeg for a pull-down string.

Sounds good to me. If I'm the only recreation boat I can always splash around on my own (after watching other people get wet!)

Well, the easiest thing is to find a post he did and click on the PM button below it. If you can find one, you need to know what his login name is, then click on the "Members" link at the top of the page, select the first letter in the "Username begins with:" dropdown box, find his username and click on the PM button.

I will be there, Lora. Probably around 5:30. I will not be staying late, but I'm good for an hour at least.

Norm, bring some immersion clothing and I'll be happy to stand next to the boat and help with bracing/rolling/wet exit/whatever.

Glad to see more people are planning to be there today. I may have to bail out - the chicken sandwich I had at lunch did not agree with me. All I want to do right now is lay down.

A very useful session. Chris reconnected with his sea kayak roll (greenland and Euro), Lora worked a lot on her balance brace, and I got to rediscover the norsaq roll (and continue to not quite manage the spine roll). Jan came out and practiced her forward stroke under Chris's expert eye.

I would enjoy doing this again. Thanks, Lora, for suggesting it!

NK

p.s. Norm, I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you all for coming out and helping me along. After NK and CGR left, Jan and I went for a paddle around Langley Island and reinforced proper torso rotation while enjoying the scenery (no wind, the water was like a mirror, little to no boat traffic, it was gorgeous). Then with Jan spotting :), I worked on my roll as the sun went down. We had a great session, thanks again.

Thanks Kate. The moral of the story is: don't try new sandwiches for lunch when you have active plans for the evening.

Glad you all had a good time. :)
