It's that happy time of year again to announce our seasonal skills sessions with the Wild Turkey Paddlers.

We're getting ready to start the 2012 season! These are scheduled bi weekly as we alternate around our other Thursday evening paddle.

We're proposing that we start these on May 24th at Camp Kiwanee. The water should be pretty comfortable for early season skills by then.

The sessions start around 5:30 PM, and last until dark or until we're all sufficiently water logged.

As always we recommend the use of cold water attire just in case it’s still cool during the early season; We strongly suggest bringing some nose plugs, you'll be far more comfortable practicing with them than without them.

These sessions are casual, fun, and completely flexible sessions where anyone and everyone can work on what they wish to, either alone or with the help of some the many skilled and talented regulars.

Come practice your paddle strokes, self / assisted rescues, work on that high brace, and for those who enjoy getting wet, learning to roll might be fun for you too!

This our clubs way of “paying it forward”, to offer to all of our members and fellow paddling enthusiasts a chance to become better paddlers amidst a fun group of people who truly enjoy being on the water. This year we will probably have the largest group of agile boat handlers we've had. So there will be no shortage of very enthusiastic paddlers who will be on hand to help teach and work with those who would like to spend some time and becoming more safe and proficient paddlers.

We're looking forward to a great season ahead!

Join us!

We have these skill sessions at the lake at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson. See the link below

Hello Jordan, Hope everyone here is well.

Hoping to get more paddling time in this year and I'm back on the search for another kayak.
Looking for a bigger one so I can head out to sea with the group.
Looking forward to seeing everyone and learning the skills needed to tour the ocean.

Hi Donna,

Hope you're off season was good to you. It will be good to see you at the sessions. You can try the boats that we have there, you're welcome to try my Romany and Explorer.

My suggestion is to go to Charles River and Billington Sea and try any and everything in a sea kayak, to see what you like. Demo early, demo often :D

See you soon!

I am hoping to make the May 24th session. Is anybody interested in dinner somewhere locally afterwards?

Yes, we normally go out to a local sports bar restaurant named Venus III after the skills session. You can check out their website and menus at http://www.venus3.com/menus.html

Everyone is invited to come to our first skills sessions this season, the more the merrier.

Hopefully Thursday's weather will be good for our first afternoon.

Plan on PPR too! It's always a good time :)

Donna - are you coming this week? Would you like to try my Venture Kayaks Easky 15...or P&H Cetus HV?

I checked the water temp today (wed) at camp Kiwanee. I couldn't reach very far from shore but it was 74 degrees! and that was with 2 different thermometers, It felt like bath water.

The signs on the gate say they close at 9 pm but I don't think they even bother to use them. The main lodge is rented quite often for all types of functions and the small cabins are rented a lot also, so it can be pretty busy in there. I will try to contact the caretaker and ask him about the gate status.

By August, we're going to have to wear dry suits to keep cool! ;)

Great turnout last night, and a lot of fun.

Couldn't have asked for better conditions for the first night of the season.

Hi all,

We're scheduled for this Thursday 6/7/2012. It will likely be cooler than our first evening so bring some cool water attire. Remember nose, plugs and masks if you're learning some new stuff and want to see what's going on under the water :D

Please RSVP so we can get an idea of whose coming and who's going to PPR (so we can make reservations)

Hope to see you Thursday!

Hi all,

Norm thank you so mcuh for the offer, I really do appreciate it.

I wanted to let you all know that I have suspended my search for a new Kayak as I have purchased a house and have been
busy with all that has to be done. I pass papers next Wednesday the 13th.
I am itching to get back into the water however I don't see myself doing much kayaking this year, but you just never know.
I do want to let everyone know that if your ever looking for parking in the Manomet/Whitehorse Beach area your welcome to park at the house.

Be safe and have fun.

Jordan,

I hope to be there and hope to go to PPR.

I'm on-call for work, so that is why I'm unsure about attendance. Usually everything runs smoothly, but I have to be ready to leave if I get a call.

Donna - glad to hear the good news that you are buying a house near the water. I hope it goes well. I think Sandy V. lives in that area too, so maybe you can meet her some time and go for a shoreline paddle some evening when life settles down again. Watch for a small car with a red and white 17' sea kayak in the neighborhood or look at some of this year's trip reports if you want to find out what Sandy looks like.

I'm doing some photography in Foxboro on Thursday afternoon, and I really have no idea how long it's going to take. If I'm back in time, I'll be there. Better put me down as a No for ppr.

I'm going to miss this one - have an all-day surfing class in RI with Greg Paquin (my BCU coach).

Norm,

I will keep an eye out for Sandy.

Jordan, I do plan on getting out it will just be a late start for me this season.
I do still work in Braintree so I can always join in a Hingham tour if the conditions allow.
I may try and pick up a 17' in the fall, we'll see how much I spend on the floors!!

What's PPR?????

Donna - I see in the previous posts that you are my new neighbor. Don't think we've paddled together yet. Looking forward to seeing you on the water! White horse or other.

Come on Sandy, you're going to get me in trouble. I guess I've failed you on the Turkey trips we've done together and skipped one of the staples of a well planned trip - where to go for PPR - Post Paddling Refreshment.

On Thursday nights, usually the majority of attendees go out to eat at a nearby restaurant after paddling. At Hanson we go to Venus III and at Hingham we go to Stars.

Sorry I've failed to educate you on this Wild Turkey Paddler tradition. :)

The PPR tradition started with beer or 2 at the takeout once the gear was secured. This became more difficult with some of the more public launches and size of the group. It was one of these informal PPRs that spawned the "that's a twist off dude" phenomenon.
You all get an A in history today.

Somewhere along the line I must have missed the transition from PPPO to PPR.
Must not be politcally correct any more. :D

Hi Mike,
I think PPPO is an NSPN term.

PPPO I believe is post paddle pig out and I think is an NSPN term. We've always done PPR.

In the spirit of PPR I felt I should share this. I wonder if they have an iPhone app as well.

Nelson, Android has a new Wag bag app. You just want to use speaker phone after the fist time you use it. Fun

HI
I am new to the group and would love to come to the Hanson paddle group. I cannot make it until the first week in July. Is that correct for the first one in July in Hanson?

Hi Weez,

You are correct.
The first Thursday of July would be the 5th and that would be a skills session in Hanson.
Welcome to the group. Hope you can join us after for PPR. (Post Paddling Refreshment).
