Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th [FULL]
The tide is right Tuesday afternoon for a Little Harbor skills session. High tide is around 4pm, so the tide should have cycled and be headed out around 5:15 or so. Little Harbor is a great safe venue to work on bracing and boat handling skills, as well as a little intro to current work such as crossing eddy lines and surfing the standing wave. I'd recommend already having some basic self/assisted rescue skills, a helmet, and a desire to learn and have fun. I'd say be ready to paddle around 5. If you're interested please post. I could also do this Thursday the 26th @7 pm but I know it would conflict with the Thursday night paddle.

Hi John,
I think this would be great, and I could surely use a tune up after being really really rusty
Tuesday sounds great to me!

Awesome, John. Count me in! I don't have a helmet. Do you have any at EMS? I am probably a small/medium.

Great to see some interest! I'd probably say no than one or two more people, so things don't get too crowded over there.
Bea, I have an extra helmet you can borrow.

OKAY! I am hopeful about getting a helmet today if there is still room in the class. It will be just me.
Is this "Little Harbor" at Woods Hole or Cohasset? Where would we put in and park?

Re: Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th
Abby,
Little Harbor is in Cohasset. It is a shallow harbor a little bit north of the main harbor. There is a constricted area near a bridge that creates a big flow of water in and out of Little Harbor.
The parking can be tricky. The town boat ramp has parking for "residents only" during the summer. Usually people drop off their boats at the town boat ramp area at the end of Parker Avenue and then move their cars to legal on-street parking on Border Street. There is a shortcut for walking back from Border street to the boat ramp that makes it shorter and easier than the driving route. Take a look at the images below for a more clear understanding, but first, if you use a GPS, a couple addresses you can use are:
Cohasset town boat ramp: 95 Parker Avenue, Cohasset
Parking: near 65 Border Street, Cohasset
At the end of Border Street turn left for the town parking area, not right where there is a private yacht club parking lot. There is a nice grassy area where you can leave your boat and gear while you move your car.
When parking on Border Street, go a little beyond the "no parking" sign at the lobster pound just beyond the bridge. You can pull up onto the sidewalk a little but leave room for people to walk by. There are some lines on the street and sidewalk that you should park within.
Here is an image that shows the parking and walking pathway. In yellow is the driving route you take to get from the boat ramp to the Border street parking. In red is the shortcut path you can walk back to the launch area.
Here is a picture of where Little Harbor is in relation to the launch area.
I hope this helps you find everything more easily.

I am aiming to go to this. I will try to remember to bring an extra helmet or two
Re: Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th
OKAY!
I bought a Bell helmet today!
Its a BMX/Skate hard shell with padding and a chin strap. It was in the kayak area of Sports Authority but their water sport section did not inspire confidence. Will this work or am I better off taking it back and getting something else? I still have time to drive farther and get something different. I have a very small head.
Thanks Norm, your a peach! I did ocean skills in that harbor with CRCaK about a year ago. Your directions will still help because I didn't have to park before.

Re: Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th
A bike/skate helmet probably has padding that will soak up water. I'm pretty sure water specific helmets have closed cell padding that won't soak up water. You might be better off returning it for a kayak specific brand.
Just a heads up for everyone, the chances of a swim are pretty good at little harbor. I have swum there many times over the years, Mark and others can attest to this. I'd dress for a swim rather than a paddle and have a dry set of clothes ready in the car.

Have gotten a skirt and done the wet exit practice. Not done solo reentry but done several assisted reentries. Might not do the surfing but those who were at Hingham end of june for thursday paddle, can I come? Also, need to borrow a helmet, if possible.

Re: Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th
Anne,
Sorry, but we're full with the 5 people who signed up already, probably going to be a little crowded over there as is. I'd encourage you to attend the skills sessions in Hanson, get your braces figured out on flatwater, and spend the rest of the season getting to know your kayak. If Tuesday's session goes well, and folks get comfortable with the venue (and if we do this again) I'd say you could come on over and check it out.

Looks like a few thunder storms wandering through, hopefully it will blow out before 5. I'd still plan on meeting and we will just keep an eye on the weather.

I second that praise!
I could never learn those skills without sticking my bow out into waves. Both of you were so patient and helpful!
Looking forward to seeing some pictures. That sky at dusk was stunning!

Sue and I were going to go over and watch, but an emergency came up. We had to go out to dinner.
But seriously, about the time we were thinking of heading over, the weather was looking pretty grim, but we'd still had our hearts set on going out to dinner afterwards, so we just went with plan B.
Glad you all had a good time!

John/Chris,
Thank you so much. I can't wait to go again. Don't make us wait too long.
I learned a lot and I really appreciate the time and your patience.

Re: Moving water skills session Tuesday 24th [FULL]
I found these 3 videos which address what we learned from John and Chris. I found them helpful to review after the hands on experience we received on Tuesday.
part 1

part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqdkAU4 ... 3B6wVawsGQ
part 3 ferrying
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwV2uCx ... ature=plcp
I didn't find any instructional videos for the 4 to 1 assisted rescue I needed that day. I certainly appreciated all the support from my helpful fellow turkeys.
My only regret is not, at least, TRYING to roll.
