Skills & Training 2014

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings All,

Our First Thursday Night Skills Session is set for May 29, 2014.

We've been doing these sessions for many years now. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take advantage of them. The more proficient you are, the safer and more enjoyable your days on the water will be.

We’ll be conducting these at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson.

They start around 5:30 PM, and last until dark or sufficiently water logged Some of our regulars will likely be there early, so if you can get out early, you’ll have some company.

As always we recommend the use of cold water attire for the first few sessions, just in case the water is still cool. We recommend bringing some nose plugs or a mask for immersion practice. Your sinuses will appreciate them after the first dunk or two.

These gatherings are casual, fun, completely flexible sessions; Everyone can work on what they wish to, either alone or with the help of some the many skilled and talented people that have become regulars over the years.

Practice your paddle strokes, self / assisted rescues, work on that high brace, and for those who enjoy getting wet, learning to roll might be fun for you too!

This is our club's way of “paying it forward”, to offer to all of our members and fellow paddling enthusiasts a chance to become better paddlers a midst a fun group of people who truly enjoy being on the water

We're looking forward to a great season ahead! Join us!

Greetings all,

Looks like we'll get a decent day for the first night of skills. It will likely be cool in the water, so plan your attire accordingly.

Dry tops work best for those who have them.

Nose plugs or masks keep the sinuses happy in the fresh water :)

Please post if you're coming and or attending PPR.

See you tomorrow!

I plan to be there for both and already have two boats loaded on my truck so I can get there as early as possible after work. Thanks for the reminder about a mask and nose plugs - gotta see where I put the stuff I was using at the pool sessions.

I plan on being there. I might not make it until 6ish but I'm going. I don't have a dry top but I have a farmer John wet suit. Can't make PPR tonight.

Looking forward to it!

I tried videotaping a few rolls last night. The results were less than spectacular, but you're at work this morning with nothing better to do, so here's what I've got.

Turns out that the slow motion effect only lasts for sixty seconds. With my rolls, that expired before I did the first one, so I've got no slo-mo. Jordan got his first roll done in time, so it looks kinda cool. But time expired and the second one is normal speed.

Also, the camera didn't adjust for the lower light once underwater, so you can barely see us. I'll read the camera manual a little more closely and see if I can resolve these.

Here's Jordan's rolls:

And my rolls, with no slow motion :x

I gave up on the camera's high-speed mode and just went normal. It now adjusts for the darker underwater light, but I don't get the silky slow motion. Oh well.

It is listed under general discussion and is open to anyone. Show up by 6. Some will get there early and do a pre-paddle paddle.

Ola! FYI, for those who have NOT been to Hanson Pond this season, we were there last Saturday and the water was very pleasant for rolling, etc. Also, thru Amazon Marketplace we picked up a bunch of Cottonmouth nose clips, good price, free freight. Cheers, S
