Hingham Harbor (7/6)

Post by Chip »

We have been tentatively planning a trip for next week, mid week. I think we originally talked about Hingham Harbor. I will also do Duxbury/Saquish, Plymouth/Long Beach. I just want to do ocean. The tides look good. High tide early afternoon. I think we had scheduled Wednesday July 6th. I can also do the 7th, but not both.

So we are looking at a 10ish start to make sure we are back at good time tide wise.

By "also", do you mean that you'll do that instead of Hingham? Personally, I'd like to do Hingham.

Yes, it's either of the 3. Hingham is my first choice as well.

May I ask why Ron needs another kayak? Am I missing something here?

I haven't paddled from that location, but I assumed it was the parking lot next to the gazebo.

When we did Hingham Harbor a couple of weeks ago we parked on the beach side and put in just to the right of the beach area. Worked out ok then.

I'm sure Chip will give us all the particulars when a day and time is set.

You're going at 10:00 AM on a Wednesday? :(

Hingham Harbor should be a fun afternoon. Whish you were doing it again on a weekend, or in the evening?

Sorry Dave,
A few of us are on vacation. I am sure we will be back.

OK so high tide is 12:26 on Wednesday. 10:00 should be good. 2 hours before and 2 hours after. That's the general rule corect?

Wednesday at 10:00 at the beach. Final answer.

This was posted for the last Hingham Harbor trip. Should hold true for this one as well. Make sure your boat can handle the conditions and has adequate flotation.
Using the trip-rating scale from Charles River Canoe & Kayak, and assuming the worse of possible conditions based on the forecast, I would rate this trip as a 2.5 (1 being easiest, 4 being hardest). The skills one should probably have are:

- Paddling 6 miles in a day in 10 knot winds with 2 foot waves.
- Performing a wet exit.
- Performing an assisted deep-water rescue.
- Maintaining a heading for short distances without the use of a rudder.
- Turning a kayak using forward and reverse sweep strokes

I am not working on the 6th so I may be able to make the trip. As usual my activity director must approve. The possible fly in the ointment is Mother-In-Law and Niece visiting from Fla.

I'll confirm my participation closer to the actual date if I am able to obtain approval.

Y'know Chip, I hate to have to point this out, but this trip really smacks of sausages. Can you fit your small grill in your boat? If not, I wonder if there are any teensy tiny grills available.

Make a grill out of large coffee can. You just need to make about 6 holes using a "church key" around the base of the can, about 1.5" from the bottom. For the actual grill, find one of the racks used for cooling baked goods after they come out of the oven.

WARNING: If you use lighter fluid, keep your face away from the opening when lighting... spoken from experience

Pat,

You need to run a long hose from the back of your house.

You know, if I take the lid off and pack it in two pieces, it may work. I'll have to test it. Also, if Joe goes in the Loon, it will definitely fit.

I have one of those starter chimneys. We could cook on that.

It's sunny out, the air is dry Who could ask for more? Well, I suppose you could ask that you don't have to go up 20,000 feet to experience these conditions. Down here in the easily-breathable area, it's raining and not much let-up in sight. People are looking out there windows saying, "My God, will you look at this? Pat and Chip must be kayaking. By the looks of the rain, they must have had this planned for a while!"

Well, four of us will at least be showing up at the launch point prepared to go and we'll make a final decision there. Hopefully I'll see someone at 10:00.

All the weather reports look pretty dismal all day. I don't think I'll be going on this trip so if you guys do head out I hope you have a great time and the weather turns for the better.

Micro-mini trip report:

It was raining as we launched, but we decided we'd rather paddle in the rain than not paddle at all. We went up to the tip of World's end, crossed Weir River, across to Bumpkin and straight back to the launch point. We spent a little time walking around Bumpkin.

For most of the trip, there was no wind whatsoever and the water was incredibly calm. With the rain, there was virtually no boat traffic. We all agreed that once we came to terms with the fact that the weather wasn't what we'd hoped for, it was really a good time.

As we rounded the last small island and the launch beach came into view, the wind suddenly picked up and it stopped being that much fun, but I'm glad we went. Looking forward to making a trip when it's clear and we can see stuff!

Thanks for the pics Pat. Our trip to Hingham Harbor started out pretty much the same as yours did (maybe without the rain) but fortunately for us it improved.
