Weymouth Back River - 6/19/11

Post by norm »

Another perfect day to get out on the water. A little more breeze than Saturday, but it was still just about perfect out there. Joe and Skip replied that they'd be joining me. Skip had a little trouble finding the right park but made it ok. Joe didn't find it and did not join us. Sorry, I guess I should have posted a Google map, but I figured this is a pretty common launch point for locals.

Here is a picture of the South Shore Yacht Club at the Abigail Adams Park and the beach we launch from. It's rocky, but is accessible at just about all tide levels.

Skip and I launched at about 1:15 and headed up river with the incoming tide. I did this same trip two weeks ago but forgot to bring a camera with me. This time I brought two. Since I knew there would be no rough water, I brought along my better camera to reach out and capture the osprey I knew were nesting here. We took our time and made our way all the way to the end of the river near the train station. The osprey in these three pictures gets louder and loader if you get too close to its nest. I have not seen or heard chicks in the nest, but they must be there. This osprey has not left the nest in the times that I've been here.

We explored most of the creeks all the way to their ends, even beyond where you can easily turn around in a sea kayak. One of the side creeks is always full of ducks but I can never get a good shot of them. I did spot these two geese in the high grass and noticed there was a young goose there also.

I couldn't get close to this great egret, but took a couple pictures of it anyway.

I saw this bird flying overhead and it looked different than the sea birds I usually see around here.

It flew into a tree at the end of a very thin creek. I had to go all the way to the end to try and spot where it landed. At first I was just guessing where it was but eventually it moved a little and I was able to pick it out from the background. I'll have to look up what kind of bird this is and add the details later. Should be fairly easy to look up with two views zoomed and cropped. [ Looked it up on-line later and it is a red-tailed hawk. ]

On the way back out of the river, there were still boats arriving in the cove to raft up for the afternoon.

We headed back out past our launch spot and I asked Skip if he wanted to go further and he said sure. He wanted to take a look at a house over by the boat ramp to see if he could still identify it as one that he worked on with his Dad when he was a kid. He wasn't sure, but this might be it...with many additions and changes over forty something years.

We decided to continue out and around Weymouthport to look at the boats and peak out at Grape Island. The marine patrol was keeping the traffic in the channel under control.

We hugged the shore on the Weymouthport side.

It seems like there are going to be a lot more jellyfish around this year. I don't recall seeing many last year.

We went out to almost the end of Webb Park and took a look at the steady traffic coming through the channel at Grape Island.

There were big boats and small, all adding to the chop, but it wasn't too bad. We decided not to go any further as it wasn't worth fighting all the boat traffic.

We turned around and headed back. It looks like they are starting another set of condos, closer to the water at the old Hingham Shipyard.

As we cruised past Stodders Neck, Skip swung in close to try to swipe a tennis ball from one of the dogs.
