City Point to Snake I 9/10/11
Saturday morning Nelson, Pat, Norm, Ken, and I left City Point for a trip around the airport.
Outside Pleasure Bay
View from Snake Island
Heading further around the airport
Someone planted this flag on Snake Island
We had to paddle all around this communication pier instead or slipping under it due to all kinds or dire warnings.
Just to make it more interesting, Codzilla had to zip by.
Here is the GPS track. I paddled 11.1 miles, Ken took detours to ride the waves.

Thanks for posting those Ron. If you look on your GPS track you can see the Belle Isle inlet was directly across from where we stopped. Oh well, maybe we'll get there another time.
Codzilla had little effect other than the WOW effect. He passed behind us while we were waiting for a very slow Spirit of Boston to pass in front of us. There was plenty of texture to make it interesting.
Fun trip.

I have more pictures to add, but don't have the time to add them till I finish another evening project editing video of a high school football game. And contrary to Nelson's opinion, I do have to work for a living.
It was a fun trip! I used to hate all that texture. Still don't like the washing machine effect, but not as nervous as I used to be when I have to deal with it.

I think Codzilla is a lot more bark than bite. It was making all kinds of noise and throwing up a ton of spray, but not going as fast as all the commotion would indicate. And that's fine. Lots of excitement for the passengers, but without the wake that your average ferry would kick up.
The plane taking off over our heads - now THAT was impressive!

How about the plane that took off out of Ron's head...you were watching that stunt pretty intently...

Looks like quite a bit of texture. Did any of the commuter boats surprise? They can kick up quite a wake.

They didn't surprise. There was wake coming in at regular intervals, so we kind of got used to it. Nothing was overwhelming. The only time it was a little unsettling was when you got into the occasional washing machine water, probably due to conflicting wakes from different angles. None of it was any worse than we've seen before. But you wonder... "If it's like this here, what's it going to be like out THERE?" It was really the sort of texture you look forward to. We've all been on ocean trips that could have been Billington Sea, and that can be a letdown.
There was a small section of water not far from where we launched that was really interesting. It would be perfect for rough water training (and not much of a distance from parking). But the water temperature is starting to get a bit brisk.
Re: City Point to Snake I 9/10/11
A little confusion on the launch time caused everybody to be early and Ken to be on-time but feeling late.
Pat, Nelson and Ron ready to go at City Point Beach.
Nelson and Ken with Castle Island in the background.
Nelson and Ken with Pleasure Bay in the background. Notice how tame the water is at the bridge.
Pat, Nelson, Ken and Ron.
Pat with Fort Independence in the background.
Gathering up for the first sprint across the main Boston harbor channel.
Reached the other side of the channel, now have the airport beside us. Pat and Ron.
We spoke with a fisherman on a kayak that warned us not to pass under the airport pier. A Massport Fire Boat had just been by checking the area.
Nelson and Pat with Snake Island between them in the background.
The plane Nelson was probably looking at in the previous picture. They seemed to be just a stones throw away.
We stopped on the first beach we saw on Snake Island and had to push our way through grass to reach shore.
Across the way was Deer Island. I'm very curious about what the device is beside the water tower? Is it a different type of wind turbine? Somebody commented that it was a giant speaker to warn the Winthrop residents that the treatment plant was about to blow!
Four of us took a walk around some of the island. Here is a view of Boston that also shows the marsh grass that surrounds much of Snake Island.
We came across this flag near Snake Island's cove with plenty of water in it.
There were some snowy egrets on the far side of the cove but I couldn't get a decent picture with my little camera..
We walked around the perimeter of the cove pond where there was a bunch of flotsam on the beach.
We took a shortcut through the bushes back to the beach we had landed on to find Pat having a rest.
After a little discussion, we decided to do a little more exploring near the airport, heading up a channel toward Belle Isle Inlet. We had to wade out in the grass to launch our boats.
Ken and Nelson and the Boston skyline.
Ron, Ken, Pat and Nelson with the Winthrop or East Boston shore in the background.
All around the airport, within about 100 yards of the shore are these "Restricted Area" buoys.
You can see the end of the runway from the water.
Somebody said these Massport cranes looked like Star Wars Imperial Walkers.
Nelson asked me to take a picture of this sailboat for Bea. Is this the Norwegian flag?
We stopped for a second rest on Snake Island but this time landed at the opening to the cove. The water was now flowing out of the little pond.
Pat found some flat rocks and a stone skipping contest ensued again.
Earlier we had a large jet take off right over our heads, very close. I didn't have the camera ready to get a shot of that. I did get this shot of a plane that lifted off long before the end of the runway before passing over us.
On our way back towards the main channel, Ken and Nelson admired this sailboat that passed behind us before heading for more open waters.
Ken headed toward the end of the pier we had to go around at the airport.
Spectacle Island from a different angle than I've photographed it from earlier this summer.
When we reached the main channel, we stopped near a green can to wait for a break in traffic.
While we were waiting, Codzilla passed behind us and Pat turned around to take a better look at it.
As Pat said earlier, it kicked up a lot of spray, but didn't create a big wake.
We started across the channel thinking we could pass in front of the slow moving Spirit of Boston but realized we better wait and paused in the middle of the channel for a moment. Ken was the first to take off as it passed in front of us.
There were two big cruise ships at the Black Falcon pier.
Ron relaxes for a moment as we made it back to Castle Island.
Ken and Nelson took a close look at the water flowing out of Pleasure Bay.
Ron heading into some rough water at another Pleasure Bay opening.
Most of us swung wide of the new fishing pier at Pleasure Bay.
Thanks for inviting me to join you on this trip Nelson. It was a good time exploring a place new to me.

Please post this trip again next year. Looks awesome. It's an area I always wanted to explore.
Thank you for taking the flag photo, Norm. It is actually the Danish flag. The Norwegain flag is almost identical in design except it has blue color added in the center. Red-white-blue, same colors as the American flag.

Danish, Norwegian, what's the difference?
