Thursday Night - 9/22/11 - The Optimists

Post by norm »

Ron, Bea and I stayed optimistic that the weather would clear up enough for us to paddle on the last Thursday night of the summer. When we arrived, it was raining but we still stayed optimistic. We waited about a half hour and it seemed to clear enough for us to paddle. We launched at about 5:00pm. The rain had stopped completely and there was absolutely no wind. Bea noticed the water was like a mirror. All 3 of us had cameras, so many pictures were taken. I'll share just a few and Bea and Ron can add theirs if they want to.

Here's Bea and Ron, right side up and upside down...but not practicing rolls this time.

The weather had cleared in Hingham, but fog banks surrounded many of the islands. Boston was nowhere to be seen. Bits of Weymouth would come and go. Hull and Hingham harbor stayed pretty clear, but I took a look at the GPS compass to get a bearing anyway in case a fog bank moved in on us. Only a few boats were around. It was eerily quiet but very nice. Commuter boats could be heard before they were seen.

It was hard to identify the islands off in the distance. It felt like we were in a mystery movie. Bea felt like she was in Maine. One of the islands looked like it had a house on it but we knew there were no houses like that out there.

We had paddled all the way out beyond Bumpkin and the sun started to peak out occasionally so we thought there was potential for a fantastic sunset. It was so calm and warm that we just sat there for a while. There were rings of fog around Slate and Grape Islands but my camera didn't capture a very representative shot of what it really looked like.

Looking out at Peddocks Island, it looked like it had been surrounded by cotton.

Rather than just sit and wait for the sun to set, Bea suggested we head toward Slate so we would have no channels to cross on the way back. The sky was brightening a little even as it was getting later. I tried to get another shot of the fog ringing Grape Island but it still did not do justice to what it looked like in person out there.

As we waited for the sun to set, it became obvious that one big dark low cloud was not going to clear in time to give us the perfect horizon shot. So I tried to grab a few silhouettes. Here is Ron.

And here is the Norwegian Queen Bea of the Kayak.

When we finished paddling and got back to the cars, Ron checked his phone and read a message to us from Tracey wishing us well.

Tracey - we wish you and everyone else could have been out there with us tonight. It was a great end to the summer.

Hope you all enjoy the pictures and that Bea and Ron can add some more.

Simply lovely photos. Best I've seen of the inner harbor islands.

A night to remember! We even found a long stem red rose floating in the water. I am not kidding. Norm brought it home and gave it to his wife!

It was a Stephen King kind of a night last night and we made several references to how eerie it was at times. Norm, I really like the photo you took of me, but where is my paddle. It looks like I am just sitting there. Maybe I am? As a matter of fact.....maybe I am still there? Did anyone see me come home??
