Padanaram to Demarest Lloyd - October 9, 2011

Post by norm »

This was Jordan's trip, but he defered to me to write the trip report. (Sorry it took me so long to get it completed.)

The weather for Columbus Day weekend was fantastic. There were trips posted for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A couple people replied that they'd attend Saturday in Boston Harbor and then switched to the Sunday trip at Padanaram. One greedy person did all of the trips...me.

This trip attracted the most people, ten. They were: Jordan, Sue, Ric, Maureen, Audrey, Pam, Bob, Ken, Nelson and me.

Getting ready.

A nice mansion.

Ken leading the pack and showing good paddling form.

I believe this is Dumpling Rocks. The seas were calm enough to swing out amongst the rocks rather than staying in close to Round Hill Point.

Nelson and Sue talking about sailing.

Silky smooth water.

Image

A few nice homes.

Paddling amongst the rocks.

Heading toward Demarest Lloyd State Park Beach.

Image

Rather than stopping at Demarest Lloyd, we headed around Barney's Joy Point to a nice sandy beach near Allens Pond. The guys who landed first helped the others with the surf landings.

Image

Image

We landed just beyond this rocky area of shore, where a beautiful stretch of sandy beach started.

Image

The whole gang unloading gear to settle down for lunch.

Image

As usual, we picked a quiet stretch of beach but there were a few people further down.

Image

Most of the gang settled down for lunch.

Image

It turned out that there was a gap in the dune and people kept coming and going through the gap. So, a few of us took a walk over and checked it out to find that there was a parking lot back there near Allens Pond.

Image

A look up and down the dunes and back at Allens Pond.

Image

A fair crowd of people further down the beach.

Image

It looks like there is some farmland on the shore between here and the Westport River.

The group milling around, preparing for the return trip.

Image

Some birds milling around in the surf.

Packing up the boats after lunch.

Heading back out on the water.

Pam and Bob.

Ric and Jordan and the other side of one of those nice houses on a point.

Ken and Nelson closer to the point.

The other side of one of the other mansions.

Sue and Nelson paddle past me...

Image

...and I notice they have something following them...

Image

A butterfly!

Image

Sue enjoying her current hobby with her former hobby sailing by in the background.

Image

A few ducks.

Image

Image

Heading back into Padanaram Harbor.

Image

A cabin cruiser was heading back to its mooring as we entered the harbor.

Image

The boat turned off the channel and gave Jordan a closer look at its bow.

Image

There were quite few nice sailboats in the harbor along with many cabin cruisers.

Image

Image

The paddling distance out and back was about 16 miles. This was enough for most of the group.

Bob, Jordan and Ken landed first.

Image

The rest of the group lands.

Image

I've never paddled under the Padanaram bridge and seen the inner harbor area. I still had plenty of energy to keep going, so I asked around to see if anyone else would like to continue. I figured Sue would be interested and she was, so we said goodbye to everyone else and headed for the bridge.

Image

The inner harbor has a nice double-wide boat ramp.

Image

It looks like there's a community beach with a snack bar.

Image

We swung around into a marsh area that hooks around behind the beach where we had launched from.

Image

Image

Image

We came back out of the marsh and went around the end of the harbor where there were some nice houses.

Image

Image

Not all of the area was developed. There was still some open space.

Image

There was one small raft/houseboat in the inner harbor.

Image

On our way back to the bridge, the lines of this sailboat caught my eye.

Image

Here is a topo map with the route we traveled highlighted.

Image

A few stats from the trip:
Launch time: 10:00am
Stop for lunch: 12:13pm, Distance paddled: 8.05 miles
