With a forecast of 10-15 kt winds from the SSW and a lovely day, Mark suggested we try a one-way trip, setting shuttle at West Island on Buzzard's Bay and catching the wind-waves to the Weweantic River, 15 miles away. It would be a straight shot up the Bay in open water. Seemed like a good idea, so we invited Phil and Lorrie to join us. Phil had just passed his BCU 4-star assessment so we were excited to have him along to share his expertise.
The paddlers:
Phil
Lorrie
Mark, working out a difficult technical problem
Following Phil's superior knowledge, I wore a tortilla hat that could also be eaten, in case of emergency.
Unfortunately, when we arrived at West Island, the beach looked foggy like this:
We consulted with Phil, uncertain as to whether it was wise to travel in the open water of the Bay when we could not take good photos. He said if he'd been alone he would do it because he could always take pictures of himself, but given that the rest of us were along, we'd better find a better venue. So we drove inland to Marion to launch from there, paddle out to the end of Sippican Harbor, over to Bird Island, and then downwind on a wild surf ride to the Weweantic River, affectionately known as the WeeWee.
Because Phil had developed unsurpassed skills, we decided to let him navigate. It was terribly foggy so we couldn't really tell where we were at a given time, but afterwards the GPS log showed us our amazing route:
So we paddled out of the harbor and made the big crossing to Bird Island and there were a bunch of birds and then we turned and headed downwind to get big exciting rides into the next bay and blah blah blah. The real excitement came when we hit the warm golden waters of the Mighty WeeWee.
Phil demonstrated his excellent paddling form for us:
Lorrie tried to emulate him but with questionable results. Not everyone can be a natural like Phil.
Then we found a rock garden. I hung back in trepidation. The crashing waves were just too frightening. But Mark, always the bold one, went dashing forth to test his mettle against the boulders of the WeeWee.
Fortunately Phil was able to execute a rescue and gave us the "okay" signal.
Then came my favorite part of the trip, where we could look at houses. And other houses. And things.
Phil showed us some surfing techniques while we hung back safely in a sheltered spot. The surf was pretty epic.
All that excitement made me hungry. I started nibbling on my hat. Phil suggested we all pull over where we could eat our hats in greater comfort. We found an awesome spot.
Off to the side was an enchantingly romantic nook which had clearly captured the hearts of others before us.
Then it was off to discover more houses and stuff.
We were a little worried when we saw this:
and sure enough, Mark managed to get into trouble again.
Phil extricated him and we continued on to our takeout, sighting much wildlife.
We had made it to the WeeWee takeout. We were flushed with success!
It was at that point that we realized our cars were back in Marion. Doh! I guess 4 stars doesn't mean you can think of EVERYthing!
Thank you, Phil, for guiding us through the WeeWee! Urine the top of your class!

I didn't get many pictures because my lousy Go-Pro camera kept shutting off, but I did get one OK shot of the plane crash.
I think Kate missed this because she was taking pictures of Phil's butt.

I have tears rolling down my cheeks as I read this report. Must be PTSD symptoms the report is triggering.
