Sunset/Moonrise Paddle to the Spit, August 3, 2012

Post by norm »

Thank you Tracey for organizing this Sunset / Moonrise trip to the Spit. Everyone had a great time.

I thought I'd get the trip report started, since Tracey did all the organizing work. Others can add on their pictures here aslo.

Everyone worked together at the Driftway to get the boats off the vehicles and ready for launching at the muddy boat ramp. No shoes were lost in the mud, but I tried real hard, sinking almost to my knees a couple times. I did hear the advice yelled to me to "lift with your toes" to pull out the shoe. I guess somebody else had prior experience with this sort of problem. The ramp is really not all that bad as long as you stay out of the soft spots.

Everyone made it into the boats ok and started down Herring River.

Another group effort gets all the boats out of the water after the short paddle.

Then, the food came out and the eating began.

Ron showed me his home-made kayak night light with the on-off switch inside the tube.

The sun starts to go down, starting the first half of the show we came to see.

The boats are all lined up neatly.

A few sunset shots.

The eating has slowed down and the sunset viewing has begun.

It was about a 45 minute wait for the second half of the show - moonrise over Fourth Cliff. It became a very dark, long wait.

Moonrise was a bit disappointing and very hard to see. Too much overcast cloudiness off-shore. The moon was barely discernable and too dim to get a steady picture. This is the best I could do.

No pictures were possible on the paddle back to the Driftway. It was so dark, a few people paddled right past the boat ramp area. Even with the Widows Walk Golf Course parking lot lit up across the road, it was impossible to distinguish the ramp area. I guess it's easier on a night when the moon is brighter, not blocked by so many clouds.

Idea for next time - bring a couple charged up, cheap, walkway solar lamps to leave at each edge of the boat ramp as a simple marker.

Thanks for organizing a fun trip Tracey.

Thanks, Norm for the report and all the pictures.
As usual, outstanding shots.

Thank you everyone for coming. It was a fun night.
Except for getting a little lost on the way back.
