Monomoy's New Break. Tues Feb 26th 2013

Post by Briggsy »

I had a new GPS to try out, the weather forecast was good and there was a new break in the barrier beach down on Momomoy, as if things couldn't get any better, the tides were also perfect for a short morning spin on the water. As I rounded the corner on Morris Island Causeway I half expected to see Norm already there !! Unfortunately his workload was too much and he couldn't make it.

From the launch I could just make out the waves at the new cut, about a mile and a half away. 30 minutes later I landed on the northern side of the break to take some pics. The surf was pounding in and there was a wicked strong incoming current, big enough to form some small standing waves. A short paddle later and I was on the southern side for more pics. The cut right now is 450yds wide.
There looked like some excellent surfing waves in the middle so I decided to give it a try. Once in the full flow of the incoming current I could not make any headway at all, I tried the middle, the edge and ferrying across some of the calmer spots but to no avail. There were some smaller waves further in so I turned to check them out, my GPS registered 8kts at one point while paddling normally !!!
Eventually I took a break for some hot soup on the tip of North Monomoy and then paddled back to the put in and home in time for lunch.
The power of the sea.....awesome!!

warm up stop at northern tip of north Monomoy. In the background both sides of the break are visible.Small waves from the break were coming this far in and there was some mild erosion on the dunes.

Pretty cool, you have your own "local" tide rip now! I wonder if the channel will deepen and ruin all the play waves, tho...

Does anyone else think that last google earth image looks like the x-ray of an alien with an arm fracture?

Having just finished a huge party at my house before a new season at the restaurant, and having had a few adult beverages myself......yes Pat, I see the alien. I'm more concerned at what that eye in the top right corner of that image is looking at !

Looks like a very dynamic area, sure to change from this to that - which will make it interesting to visit again and again! Thanks for documenting the current state of affairs.
