BROKEN GROUP ISLANDS, VANCOUVER ISLAND

Post by pam »

I was on the west coast for a meeting and took some extra days to join a kayaking expedition in the Broken Group Islands in September, 2013. I went out ahead of the meeting on September 8 so I could have a couple of days to see the island and to make my way to Ucluelet, which was near the put in site. It is a lovely, quaint, fishing village. Ucluelet means "people of the safe harbor" in the indigenous language of the First Nation peoples.

The Broken Group is a cluster of small islands in the middle of Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. The group is protected as a part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and consists of over 100 islands, islets and rocky outcrops.

This area is known around the world for the awesome kayaking and wilderness camping. It is a tranquil group of islands because of its seclusion from the open ocean. The natural features include lagoons, sandbars, blowholes, arches and other secluded settings.

Remnants of ancient native settlements, village fortifications, stone fishtraps and archaeological sites are abundant in this traditional territory of the Canadian aboriginal peoples (First Nation Peoples).

I joined up with three other women and our guide, Kevin. The weather was wonderful - the first days clear and summer-like, and then some fog rolled in which created a very ethereal atmosphere. You can find photos of this trip by going to this facebook link:

Excellent trip report Pam!

Thanks for shooting the photos on your trip and then taking the time to share them. It looks like the Pacific Northwest is a paddling place we should all add to our "bucket list".
