Broad Cove Onset to Mass Maritime 3/23/14 noon

Hi, I usually do a lot of fresh water Kayaking and kayak fishing.
I have been getting more daring in my sea adventures over the last few years and I decided to try a decent run (for me anyway).
I have a first generation Carolina 14'7" with rudder, skirt, paddling jacket, gloves and hat of course. Not the fastest but very worthy for my large frame.
I put out behind the bridge in Onset a little before 1pm.
The weather was cool, 40 with a decent wind starting up. The tide was low.
I had no trouble going around Wickets and Onset Island. Until now I had just stayed in the bay area up to Onset Island.
The view was nice and there were no other boats so it was quiet. The waves were low but there was a pretty good current.
Its about two miles to Mass Maritime and the current helped greatly. I meandered around a little sightseeing.
At some point I thought it would be a good idea to get closer to the large training boat, the Kennedy.
I was pretty confident but as I came around the stern ( still about 80 ft away from the ship ) and took a few pictures I found the current had increased dramaticaly.
I started getting a little to close to the canal inlet and I felt it. It took a lot of effort to pull out of the area.
Overall very fun but next time I pay more attention to the current and the canal tide.
