Ockway Bay to Cotuit Bay & around Osterville Grand Islan

Post by Birdseye »

This trip will be limited to 10 paddlers
We currently have commitments from Jordan, Johnysmoke, Ron, Ken, Steven and Nelson. There are 4 spots remaining

Just for the record:
I am not the trip leader I am the trip organizer. As always all participants are responsible for their own safety and should have all the skills and equipment necessary to be able to do this trip alone.

Trip Date: Saturday - May 17th
Launch Time: 10:00 AM (be there by 9:30)
High Tide: 12:30 PM
Current Weather Predictions: Scattered Showers, 59 deg, wind 7mph NNW
Current Water Temp: 50 deg

Trip Distance: Approx. 14 mi
Trip Pace: 3 knot average

Paddling Conditions: Mostly protected but one 2 mile crossing exposed to open ocean

Trip Cancellation
This trip will be canceled if high winds and rain will be present most of the day but will be rescheduled for a better day. However, after Memorial Day parking presents a problem to non residents.

Requirements:

You must post your interest here. Do not just show up at the put in.

Due to early season conditions participants must have paddled with us in the past (Hingham, Hanson included).

Due to water temps you must at least have a wetsuit and paddling jacket (dry top preferred)

You should have a good handle on all the basic skills including self and assisted rescues

Must have a pfd and a spray skirt

Boats of 14’ or greater (16 or greater preferred)

We’ll meet at the put in at 9:30 and plan to be on the water by 10:00. Some people have later commitments so we need to be timely. We’ll head NE from the put in and paddle around the SW side of Popponesset Island. Then past Thatch Island and into Nantucket Sound for a 2 mile crossing to Osterville Grand Island in Cotuit Bay. We can take a short break and a lunch break while circumnavigating Osterville Grand then head back the way we came but paddle back to the put in on the NE side of Popponesset Island. (see image)

I’ve done this trip twice before without circumnavigating OGI and always had an enjoyable time. Here is a link to one of the trip reports.

Depending on when we get back will determine if I can do PPR but there are a couple of places if others are interested at the Mashpee Commons on the way back.

Other things you should bring:
Pump and float
Extra clothes
Gloves
Lunch
Water
Spare paddle
Sun screen
Other things you can bring:
Tow line, charts, gps, compass, etc (if you have and want to bring them)

You may want to increase your pace to be more realistic, unless you are planning major headwinds, to make sure people know what they are in for.

I would say 3.5 -4 knots. If that's approx 3 knots then nevermind. :)

No wonder why he never shows up. All he gets is grief.

Steven, I'll paddle with you grief free. Just not Barnstable Harbor. :D

Did you ever think we might like having Steven (and you for that matter) on the paddles with us. Unfortunately, it has become so seldom that we have reverted to ridicule and shame to try to get your sorry a$$e$ on the water.

You should be flattered.

Damn! This would have been an opportunity to get re-certified as a paddling wise-ass. :P But its graduation time...and I've got a command appearance to make way the Hell up in West Newbury. My only consolation is that I would have had to dig out the damned wet suit for this... and I hate that thing.

Have a great trip. Take pictures please.

Ok, so Steven had to back out because of work  and Mark and Kate have passed the rigorous entrance exam and will join us.

Ron has offered the use of his trailer if people want to meet at the old Applebees parking lot just off Exit 6 on Route 3 south (first exit 6 not sure if A or B) if people want to carpool and conserve gas. (holds 5 boats)

Ken also said he can take up to 3 boats on his car.

Anyone interested in either let us know here.

Current weather outlook for tomorrow.

Right now their saying AM rain but according to the hourly forecast there's only a 30% chance of rain at 10AM and it gets better from there. Wind is predicted to be at 12 mph from the NW

Latest Weather Update:

This is what the National Weather Service is saying for Nantucket Sound

N WINDS 20 TO 25 KT...BECOMING NW 15 TO 20 KT AROUND
NOON...THEN BECOMING W 10 TO 15 KT LATE. GUSTS UP TO 35 KT. SEAS 3 TO 5 FT. RAIN LIKELY IN THE MORNING. PATCHY FOG IN THE MORNING WITH VSBY 1 TO 3 NM.

Lately the weather predictions seem to be trumped up a bit and when the day actually comes it doesn't seem that bad.

I'm willing to drive down there and check it out even if we call it off then or just paddle around Popponesset Island.

What do others want to do?? Please speak up.

It still sounds like we can get some good paddling in. I'm still up for it! What time should we meet at Applebees?

Nelson: I'd say you picked a good spot to paddle given the predicted wind direction. Boats are loaded, so I'm still planning to come. Check the forecast in the morning and make a call then?

Ok sound like we're still a go.

Ken, until now I didn't think anyone was planning to meet at Applebees. No one replied specifically to that post about using Ron's trailer.

I am going to try to be home by 4pm because I have somewhere to go later so I'll be taking my own car. I know Jordan has to be home as well and will be taking his own car.

If folks want to meet at Applebees and caravan down let us know. I'd say to meet there about 8:15.

One report still shows the rain letting up at 10am
