Padanaram - Demerest Lloyd 2008
Greetings All,
Thinking about Padanaram to Demerest Lloyd for this Saturday?
9:30 AM Put In = Arrive by 9:00 AM
Location is just off Padanaram road onto Smith Neck, on the side of the road.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Padanaram+bridge+South+Dartmouth+MA&sll=41.581424,-70.909023&sspn=0.091168,0.149689&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr
The long range forecast is for light winds out of the east........ Sorry no 25 mph plus like last year
Please post if you're planning to attend.
While this is looks like a relatively easy paddle, it is approximately 16 miles round trip. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2020133
As we saw last year this area can get textured, so everyone needs to have practiced self and assisted rescue skills and all the other requisite safety gear etc. You all know the drill...... please come properly prepared.
Anyone interested in paddling, please post your plans to attend before Saturday.
Cheers,
Jordan

I was wondering the same thing. The forecast I'm looking at is closer to yours. I think he's trying to pull the old bait and switch.

Synopsis For Massachusetts And Rhode Island Coastal Waters
High pressure builds over the waters early today...then makes way for a weak cold front to slide south into southern New England tonight. This will bring showers and thunderstorms to the waters late today and tonight. The front will remain stalled over the coastal waters Saturday night or Sunday...then lift north on Monday.
Saturday...
NW winds 5 to 10 kt...becoming NE in the late morning and afternoon. Seas around 2 ft. Patchy fog. A chance of showers and tstms in the morning. Vsby 1 nm or less.
-----
Forecast is for tamer conditions than last year...but it still looks like we're in for some rock & roll. (Mostly rock in my case. )

Thanks Jordan, you picked the right day and place as far as I'm concerned. Sorry to the rest of you that there wasn't more exciting "texture" out there for you, but I was very happy the water was fairly calm. I was thoroughly fried and exhausted by the time I got home - still tired after a 3 hour nap. I can't imagine how tiring that trip must have been last year.

Thanks to all!
It was another good day on the water.
I do think we'll have to start researching and find out what exactly our rights are to land on a state beach or park. It does seem inconceivable that we have legal access to these areas.
Great day, great company, and some gooooooood ice cream for PPR!

Hey Mike, didn't you have some binoculars in all that gear you had? That "cow" was too far away to see very well with the naked eye but I took a bunch of shots with my camera zoomed to the max. Most shots came out fuzzy, but a couple were clear enough to see that the cow had horns on it!
I tried to attach a picture, but I don't know how to upload it.

Cow...bull...longhorn...water buffalo. Whatever it was we should have taken it for a swim down to the state park and then watched the fun from offshore. The regulations are pretty bollixed up....
Things to know before you go...
The park is generally open from mid may to mid September. Park hours in season are 10 am to 6 pm weekdays and 8 am to 6pm weekends and holidays. There are absolutely no pets allowed on the beach at any time. Kite surfing, skim boards, boogey boards or flotation devices of any type are not allowed. Powerboats and Jet Ski's are not allowed to land on the beach. Shell fishermen must have a valid Dartmouth shellfish license. It is very helpful if youth groups call ahead of time to schedule visits.
Pets are prohibited...but they don't mention livestock. Jet skis and powerboats are prohibited...but kayaking is actually listed as one of the attractions. I love this state.
By the way, it looks like the second beach from which we were tossed is actually known, ironically, as Barney's Joy. A happy, welcoming place indeed.

I parked and launched from there last year several times without hassle. But I did park at the smaller lot which I think is where he was telling us to go.

Getting thrown off beaches
It seems like we've been over "getting thrown off beaches" before Mass Law is quite clear - you can access any point (from the water) on the shore below the "mean" high water mark for hunting, fishing, fowling or "navigational" purposes
Fairly interpreted if you are kayaking and need to land for a rest or repair, any shoreline below the high tide line is open to you (you just need to stay below the high tide line and not linger for too long) Obviously, when landing at beaches with defined swimming (or surfing) areas. you should try to avoid landing in the midst of areas that are clearly reserved for these and other similar recreational uses - lifeguards are likely to perceive kayaks as a potential danger to swimmers and surfers.
Rights aside, land owners, local law enforcement, park rangers, and lifeguards seem to be woefully ignorant of the law
Perhaps you should recruit a lawyer to paddle with you, or at least pack a copy of the appropriate section of the Mass General Laws

Hmmm....Perhaps we need a lawyer who has actually researched the question and figured out how much legal ammo could be fired at 20-year olds working summer jobs on small town beaches in southeastern Massachusetts and at waterfront property owners in very expensive neighborhoods before a 911 would bring the local police, possibly with boats. We definitely need a strategy.
OK I'M ON IT!
Has anyone already looked at this question? There must be something in the archives. No need to reinvent the wheel.
