Wellfleet Let's-Visit-the-Seals Trip Sunday Oct 11

Post by noseykate »

Now that September is past, there is parking available again at the Wellfleet Harbor put-in. It's a 3-day weekend, and Sunday looks like the best day of the three. Tides are perfect for a ride out to the seals, lots of exposed sandbar for lunch, and a ride back.

I'm suggesting this trip for advanced beginner to intermediate paddlers in particular. Wellfleet Harbor is a protected area, much like Hingham Harbor, not flatwater, not river. There's the option to go out to Cape Cod Bay if desired. It requires some distance paddling (something around 8 mi r/t) so rec boats will not be appropriate. If you've been doing mostly flatwater and are looking to step up your paddling a bit, this is for you. If you want to paddle in a lovely location and probably see a colony of seals, this is for you. We can do a little roll practice in there somewhere if anyone wants to give it a try or polish up the skills. We can have lunch wayyyyy out on the sandbars exposed at low tide.

This is one of my favorite locations but the parking is unavailable between Memorial Day and the end of September. Yay for October!

Exact launch time to be announced later, but probably something like 9:30 or 10.

Anyone interested?

I've never been down there! I'm in.

But if there's no seals, I want a full refund.

Oh darn, I don't get done teaching in Hingham until 11:30 am on Sunday's or else I too would be interested. What is the parking like anyway? I have an unusual set up, as you may recall, with my yak sticking out the bed of my truck on a truck bed extender. Do you think I would have any trouble parking there? Maybe I can find someone who will want to do the same trip on Monday? Thanks - Lora

Parking would be okay. It's a small off-street lot, enough room for maybe 10-15 cars. Sorry you can't make it on this one. It'd be great to paddle with you again.

I may be interested if I don't end up on the deerfield again.

Are you and Mark going to run little suncook on saturday?

Hey! This sounds great! Wait a minute, I have another commitment. Well, dang!

The first time I ever paddled in Wellfleet Harbor, it was with a group that was probably 75% rec boats. If conditions are relatively calm (not too windy) you could probably paddle out there on a log and not have to worry. Keeping up with Kate is a whole 'nother matter, though!

I'm interested too! I thought my wife might not want me to go out paddling both Saturday and Sunday, but she says go for it while the weather is still good. Yahoo!

Hey! This looks like a great one. I'm here in the States for another few weeks...and my oldest son is also here from the West Coast. We may both join you if things work out.

I will confirm.

Yes, I'll post directions and time, probably on Friday. Do try to make it. Looks like it will be a lovely day for it.

Here is some information to help you get to the launch site.

Here's something new I'm going to try...
Printable map and directions

Directions from Sagamore Bridge:
(I got these directions from the Aunt Sukie's Bed & Breakfast website with some additions from me. Hopefully, Aunt Sukie knows her way around.)

Rt 6 for about 47 miles, to Wellfleet.
Take left turn into Wellfleet Center (stop light and green arrow) (Main Street)
Through town, left onto Holbrook Ave., go 1 block, right onto Chequessett Neck Rd.
Less than 1 mile, through stop sign, water on left, Aunt Sukies at bottom of hill. Name on mailbox.

As best as I can tell, the parking lot is pretty soon before Aunt Sukie's.

You can actually see the name on the mailbox with the google earth thing!!!
I'm impressed! (just kidding- no need to respond to my sillyness)
Thanks for the MARVELOUS directions... I'm psyched!

Thank you, Pat.

I actually take a slightly different route, going via Commercial Street, past the cool boardwalk to an island in a cove, through the artsy gallery section, to Kendrick at the town pier, and along the shore, and then merging with Chequessett Neck Road. Either way works.

Let's say meet at 9 and launch by 9:30. That will put us at mid-ebb-tide.

Let's hope the seals cooperate!

Linda, It should be under 2 hours' driving time. It's about 1 hr 45 min from my place at Braintree. No traffic this time of year, so maybe 1.5 hours.

Sorry, the tides don't care about our schedules.

So if I leave at 7:30 from Marshfield, that should give me plenty of time to get off the exit in Plymouth and pick up Ron.

FYI - I believe that there are traffic lanes out of service on at least one of the bridges over the canal.

Good point. Mark and Jess went down 2 weekends ago and had no wait at the Sagamore bridge getting on the Cape. Coming back there was a line, but since it's a 3-day weekend I wouldn't think it'd be too bad on Sunday afternoon.

OK...looks like I'll be there. :D

Whether son # 1 joins me or not is an open question. He's partying with all his old pals while he's back in town, himself...and I do not know if he'll be here in time to depart for Wellfleet tomorrow (or if he'll be in good enough form to paddle... :P )

See everyone in Wellfleet tomorrow morning.

Sunday afternoon may not be bad traffic-wise to travel home... just planting a thought, though... might any one be interested in some post paddle R=R - social time after the paddle?
Hubby suggested I 'catch dinner instead of fighting traffic'... sounded good to me... anyone else game?

I helped a friend move after paddling today so I am going to sleep in a bit tomorrow instead of driving to Wellfleet. I hope that the seals are out in full force and that the weather is great!

I doubt I'll be able to make it tomorrow either. I've been at work for 12 hours now and still not done so I think I'm going to need some rest tomorrow. I don't get Monday off, so all this 3 day weekend talk has been a little annoying. Just gotta keep telling myself it's better than being unemployed.

Have a great time out there tomorrow.

Very sorry that you won't be able to make it, Norm. Sounds like it was a dreadful Saturday. We'll have other Wellfleet trips. At least you know you'll be home for the Patriots game :)

Until last year I didn't get this holiday off either, so I know what you mean about annoyance. And yes, it was better than being unemployed.

Until next time,
