Boston Harbor Islands - Graves 5/1/10
Jordan and I are thinking about paddling around the harbor islands on Saturday. Nothing planned yet, just hoping the weather will turn out as forecast and maybe we can head out to the Graves Lighthouse. I assume we'd launch from Hull. Just thought I'd post it and see if others are interested.
This is a serious paddle, cold water gear necessary. Trip length likely to be over 10 miles.

From physical therapy to water therapy, now that's a regimen that appeals to me
Here's a past route we did last year.
The weather should be spectacular, light ESE wind. High tide is 2:18 PM.
Cheers,

Hi Jack,
Minimum of a full wet suit, foot wear and gloves for cold water as well. You'll need to have and know how to use all your safety gear as well. Please have the ability to perform a wet exit comfortably, it's a must have. Passing through Hull Gut can always be interesting
Altantic Kayak Tours dowe a great job explaning what works for cold water attire.

Chip - hope you can make it! Don't bother dusting off the kayak, it's better if you wash it with salt water.
Do you have any time constraints?

How does 10 AM arrival work for those interested?
Norm and I will likely be there early as usual.
We're looking forward to a fun day!

I am glad to see that Jordan is easing his way back into the water!
Re: Boston Harbor Islands - Graves 5/1/10
Ok sounds great. I will see you at the end of Hull Point by 10 am and plan to get ready quickly. I will check the WT board before I leave just in case your plans have changed.

Unfortunately, I don't have a wet suit or other suitable cold water clothing so I'll need to pass on this....and look to get the appropriate clothing - I do want to extend my paddling season!
Have a great time!

See you in the AM Chip & Norm!
Jack, Ocean State Job Lot typically has some great deals on wet suits. We'll look forward to seeing you on another trip.

Bummed I couldn't go! How was the wind? I ended up paddling the North River and found some heavy wind at times. Figured it would be much more pronounced on the ocean...
No matter where - it was great to get the first paddle of the year accomplished!
Look forward to the report!

The wind was almost non-existent on the way out but definitely picked up on the way back in. Crossing the channel from Great Brewster toward Point Allerton, we had some quartering wind and waves and then we turned to ride the wind back to Hull Gut. At the end, we were getting that washing machine wave effect.
The water out there was very cold. It was very hot in the dry suits, but to cool off, all you had to do was dip your hands deep in the water to appreciate why you were wearing it.
Happy to hear you were able to get out and paddle.

Hi Jack,
The wind was only moderate towards the end of our return trip, but was really quiet heading out. It's always a little lumpy in the flats coming from Boston Light towards the wind turbine.
Glad you had a good day on the water!

It was a little lumpier in Rhode Island where we were yesterday:

Trip report for the Graves is up.
Are we going to have a trip report from Rhode Island?

Naw. It was actually a demo day at the Kayak Centre. Afterwards, Phil suggested checking out the mouth of the Narrow River near to Narragansett. Turned out that even on a flat day there were waves there (much like New Inlet in Scituate). Nothing big, just fun size. We surfed and messed around there, then paddled out to this rock outcrop offshore where the above photo was taken. The ocean was actually more or less flat - ocean swell but no breakers - but when the swell hit this spot there was some major splashing and booming.
I was thinking that you had the perfect day for your trip. Glad it worked out so well!

Read your review and Phil's review of the kayaks. That'll qualify as a trip report.

Re: Boston Harbor Islands - Graves 5/1/10
I saw some wetsuits at the $2 T-shirt place on the cape while I was shopping around the area during your trip to see seals a few weeks ago. This one was on the road not too far from the ice cream/seafood place where we went for PPR that day (I think it was Rte 6 in Wellfleet? - not far from the Wellfleet Drive-in, if heading back in the direction of your launch site that day).
The $2 T-shirt places are all over the cape; keep an eye out for one next time you're on the cape if you're looking for wetsuits. I have no idea what they go for; seems like they were around $35 there (per piece - top/bottom).
